Deets: On Saturday, September 26, the 2015 Global Citizen Festival was held on the Great Lawn of New York’s Central Park. The Festival saw world and business leaders come together to commit to the newly launched Global Goals for Sustainable Development. It featured performances by Pearl Jam, Beyoncé, Ed Sheeran and Coldplay, with special performances from Ariana Grande, Common, Tori Kelly, and Sunidhi Chauhan. The 2015 Global Citizen Festival coincided with the new Global Goals for Sustainable Development, adopted by 193 countries at the United Nations on Friday, September 25.

Approximately 60,000 global citizens attended and millions watched live throughout the day through broadcast partners MSNBC and YouTube. A one hour broadcast special based on the Global Citizen Festival will be aired in more than 70 countries in the next week.

Since 2012, the Festival has been the largest, most visible moment of a year-round movement of global citizens committed to ending extreme poverty by 2030. This movement combines the action and voices of millions of citizens, the efforts of non-profit organizations, the anthems of socially conscious artists, and the commitments of world leaders.

Global citizens took more than two million actions in the months leading up to the Global Citizen Festival, leading to the 27 announcements and commitments that were made from the stage. These commitments are set to affect the lives of more than 92 million people, and will be used by global citizens to hold governments and businesses accountable to deliver on their promises in the years to come.

What Is Global Citizen?

The fight for justice has never been easy. But human history has always been shaped by the courageous actions taken by those with a vision of a better world.

From the civil rights movement to the end of Apartheid, people with a belief in a better world have sparked and spread their passion for progress to families, communities and countries across the globe, building justice movements that have changed society forever.

As Global Citizens, we stand against the greatest injustice of our time: extreme poverty. We're fighting because we know that a world that deprives 1.2 billion people of their basic rights and opportunities is unjust, and unacceptable. We're fighting because we know that we must be the ones to do something about it.

As Global Citizens we celebrate the efforts made to cut extreme poverty by half, but recognise more still needs to be done. We know that people living in extreme poverty are working hard to break the cycle of poverty themselves, but that we need to learn, and take action, to change the rules that trap them in broken golobal systems that have been in place for far too long.

We don't ask for charity, we ask for justice. And we put our hands up to write the next chapter in the greatest story yet to be told... the end of extreme poverty.

Using Global Citizen we unite and amplify our collective voice, working together to learn more and take action on issues that perpetuate extreme poverty. We share our passion for the issues we care about, and mobilise around crucial moments for change.

Help us build the movement of Global Citizens taking action for change. Get started by reading our manifesto, and seeing the latest stories and actions in our key themes of food and hunger, education, health, water and sanitation, enterprise and innovation, women and girls, and sustainability.
