When: Thursday, May 5 - Sunday, May 8, 2016
Hot Spot: Randall's Island Park, NYC
Deets: The fifth edition of Frieze New York returns to Randall’s Island Park, Manhattan from May 5–8, 2016. More than 200 galleries will bring together the most exciting emerging and established artists from around the world.
Independent curators Cecilia Alemani (High Line Art, New York), Clara M Kim (Tate Modern, London), Jacob Proctor (Neubauer Collegium for Culture and Society at the University of Chicago), Fabian Schöneich (Portikus, Frankfurt) and Tom Eccles (Center for Curatorial Studies, Bard College, New York) will curate sections dedicated to innovative solo shows and a program of ambitious artist commissions and talks.
Building on its reputation for ambitious, museum-quality presentations, the fair will feature solo shows by Markus Amm (Herald St, London), Melvin Edwards (Alexander Gray Associates) and a group show featuring works by David Wojnarowicz (P.P.O.W, New York) among others. Sperone Westwater (New York) will participate for the first time; whilst High Art (Paris) and Regards (Chicago) join the Frame section for young galleries debuting solo presentations.
Following its acclaimed first edition in 2015 the Spotlight section, dedicated to rare presentations by pioneering artists of the 20th century, returns with a new curator Clara M Kim. This year has a new emphasis on American artists of the 20th century including Ralph Humphrey (Garth Greenan Gallery, New York) and David Ireland (Anglim Gilbert Gallery, San Francisco).
Frieze Projects and Frieze Sounds will be curated by Cecilia Alemani, presenting ambitious site-specific works throughout the fair. This year's artists are Alex Da Corte, Anthea Hamilton, David Horvitz, Eduardo Navarro, Heather Phillipson and a tribute to the Daniel Newburg Gallery with a special project by Maurizio Cattelan.
This year sees Victoria Siddall’s first edition of Frieze New York as Director, taking over from Matthew Slotover and Amanda Sharp and supported by Artistic Directors Abby Bangser and Joanna Stella-Sawicka. In 2016, Frieze also celebrates its 25th anniversary year.
