Colin Farrell stars in this peculiar comedy-drama that is a very different look at life, love, and mortality. Set in the not-too-distant future, writer-director Yorgos Lanthimos establishes a world of misery and acceptance in a small hotel compound in the English countryside, where the forlorn David (Farrell) has to make a big decision about his life. He has a limited amount to time to make a choice about a mate, and should his selection not work out to his satisfaction, he has to make the ultimate sacrifice—pick an animal to be turned into, so that he can be set free into the wild—presumably to have a better life. David’s already in bad shape—his wife has left, and he arrives with his brother, who has already spun the Wheel of Fate at the hotel. Lanthimos, best known for his 2009 isolationist drama Dogtooth, the winner of the Prix Un Certain Regard at the Cannes Film Festival, has created another low-key but absurdist world of extremes in Lobster. In this English-language film debut, his able cast also includes Rachel Weisz, Ben Whishaw, Léa Seydoux, and John C. Reilly.
