Deets: For his most recent feature, director Guillermo del Toro creates his first true Gothic romance, a 21st-century take on a 19th-century world of creaking floorboards, decaying mansions, and hidden secrets. Mia Wasikowska stars as Edith, a young writer who wants to create stories about ghosts rather than light romances. Her life is thrown for a loop when she meets the dashing English inventor Thomas Sharpe, baronet (Tom Hiddleston). Despite the objections of rival suitor Dr. McMichael (Charlie Hunnam), Edith has soon been swept from America to Sharpe’s sumptuous haunted-house of an English manor, where ghostly figures leave her terrified and the intense family dynamic between Thomas and his sister, Lucile (Jessica Chastain), leaves Edith further unsettled. Is this the “Crimson Peak” her mother’s ghost warned her of? In true gothic tradition, the mansion plays a vital role in the story, creaking and groaning, bleeding and breathing along with its residents. Working with a vibrant visual palette, abetted by the stunning art direction and costume design, del Toro creates a film rich in symbolism, and builds a set of relationships even more twisted than the corridors of the house that contains them.
