Affair: Gehry and Music

When: Thursday, February 8, 2016 @ 8PM

Hot Spot: Walt Disney Concert Hall, Los Angeles, CA

Deets: In conjunction with the special exhibition Frank Gehry (on view through March 20), LACMA and the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association present this program, which addresses the architect's process and collaboration during the planning and construction of Walt Disney Concert Hall. The program is the third in a series focusing on Gehry's three areas of interest—art, science, and music.

This event features Gehry in conversation with two people with whom he worked closely during the years leading up to the hall's opening: Esa-Pekka Salonen, music director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic from 1992 until 2009 (currently principal conductor and artistic advisor for London's Philharmonia Orchestra and conductor laureate of the LA Phil); and Deborah Borda, who came to Los Angeles in 2000 as LA Phil president and chief executive officer, David C. Bohnett Presidential Chair. They will be joined by LACMA's senior curator of modern art, Stephanie Barron, curator of Frank Gehry.

Walt Disney Concert Hall in downtown Los Angeles opened in October 2003. Designed by Gehry, it has become instantly recognizable around the world, and is a beloved city icon. Widely praised for its architecture and its acoustics (designed by Yasuhisa Toyota), it serves as the home of the world-renowned Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra as well as the Los Angeles Master Chorale, and is the site of dozens of additional concerts and musical events throughout the year. Accolades for the architecture, the interior spaces, and nearly everything else about the building have proceeded nearly nonstop since its opening.
