LAWN BY NATIONAL BUILDING MUSEUM, DC

  • National Building Museum (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Deets: The National Building Museum will partner with the LAB at Rockwell Group to present the 2019 Summer Block Party installation. Lawn will be an immersive installation taking up the entirety of the Museum’s Great Hall, and present interactive experiences for all ages. Lawn is open July 4 through September 2, 2019.

Lawn allows guests to unwind with quintessential summer activities while connecting to the design of the Museum. It features a vast, sloping green space built on a scaffolding superstructure. Visitors purchase tickets at a reception area that features a building-scale mural of the sky, containing a dimensional title treatment set against a pixelated cloudscape made up of classic summertime iconography. Guests are directed towards a pathway running alongside the scaffolding, leading to a gently sloping trail that will bring visitors to the base of the lawn.

Visitors are met with a green expanse, set on a graceful incline and dotted with clusters of communal lounging areas. The centerpiece of these lounging areas are interactive hammocks suspended from the 100-foot-tall ceiling grid. The hammocks contain hidden speakers programmed with pre-recorded audio from prominent American storytellers, sharing summertime memories. At the top of the lawn is a scaffolding tower that reaches the height of the Museum’s third floor, offering never-before-seen views of the Great Hall, column capitals, and sculptural busts lining the roof.

Hint for the Average Socialite: Free passes will be available online for members on June 18; general admission will be available for advance purchase starting June 25. A limited quantity of tickets will be available on site each day. Tickets for Late Nights and special programs are sold separately and are not included in general admission.

Kennedy Center x Frank Brown & DC Millennials with Port City Brewing Co.

Kennedy Center x Ritmos Raros presents Immigrant Sounds Rooftop Party with 3 Stars Brewing Co
with Neal Becton aka DJ Neville C (Som Records), Marcello Bentine (Batida DC), and Sir Ramases (Afro Ritmo Records)
July 11, 2019
Ritmos Raros is a moving, but never-ending nostalgic tropical-vinyl-dancefloor party dedicated to the rare and normally unheard rhythms of Africa, Latin America, India, Caribbean, Brazilian, and the Arab variety.

Kennedy Center x Union Stage presents CHAI and This/Side with 3 Stars Brewing Co.
July 18, 2019
Japanese four-piece CHAI may worship at the altar of kawaii—their homeland’s culture of cute—but they’re not about to be pushed around by the idle bosses and the ignorant patriarchy. The ultra-concise pop of their debut LP PINK is about to be overhauled on their new album. CHAI are ready to light the fuse; CHAI are PUNK. CHAI returns to D.C. following an exciting performance at Union Stage at The Wharf in March 2019.

Kennedy Center x Smithsonian Year of Music presents JP Harris and More with Port City Brewing Co.
August 1, 2019
Born in Montgomery, Alabama in 1983, JP Harris doesn’t fancy himself so much a musician as he does a carpenter who writes country songs. Harris has been writing and performing country music for nearly a decade now, releasing I’ll Keep Calling, in 2012. , and following with Home Is Where the Hurt Is in 2014. His latest album, Sometimes Dogs Bark at Nothing, received a 2018 Independent Music Awards nomination in the Best Country Album category and was named one of Paste Magazine’s 100 Best Albums 2018.

Kennedy Center x Frank Brown & DC Millennials with Port City Brewing Co.

Records on the Rooftop is a creative collaboration of musical and visual vibes. Three of D.C.’s top DJs set the scene mixing summer feel good hits atop one of D.C.’s most unique rooftops.

TASTEMAKER TOUR, DC

  • Washington Market Dock 5 (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Deets: We’re hanging out with DC’s chefs, mixologists, and producers to create an unforgettably delicious Tastemaker DC. Tastemaker Tour, hosted by each city’s favorite chefs, mixologists, and producers, Tastemaker will bring a new type of immersive culinary experience with food, drink and music at its core to some of North America’s best culinary destinations.

The heart of Tastemaker, like any good party, is in the Tastemaker Kitchen—an open, collaborative space where the best chefs from each city (as well as a few brought along  from other tour stops) will pair up and blend their unique styles to produce one-of-a-kind dishes and menus that reflect the city on a plate. With a rotation of DJs spinning throughout the day and night from inside the kitchen, guests can hit the dance floor while tasting unique creations and mixing with culinary tastemakers.

The same rules apply at Tastemaker’s very own drinks cabinet, The Tastemaker Bar—a craft cocktail hub bringing together the city’s mixologists to put fresh local twists on all the classics. Also joining the party is a curated selection of more than 30 restaurants, wineries, breweries, and producers that guests can discover while exploring Tastemaker’s immersive home for the weekend.

Tastemaker is created by IMG, an Endeavor company and the team behind some of the most popular culinary events around the globe, including Taste Festivals, The World Restaurant Awards, The Big Feastival and Gourmet Escape. The events give guests a unique all-inclusive experience where they can enjoy food, drink, and entertainment, in a unique setting from just $55, and is for ages 21 and over.

KENNEDY CENTER HAPPY HOURS, DC

  • John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Deets: The Kennedy Center brings the fun outdoors this summer with four free rooftop happy hours, taking place on Thursdays June 13, July 11, July 18, and August 1 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The series is offered in partnership with local and national partners, who will curate each event. Frank Brown & DC Millennials, Ritmos Raros, Union Stage, and Smithsonian Year of Music bring their unique artistic selections to the Center’s Rooftop, making each happy hour a different musical experience for all those wanting to kick back, relax, and enjoy a summer evening outside. The Center’s Rooftop will transform into a contemporary lounge space, with guests able to sample beer from 3 Stars Brewing and Port City Brewing Company, as well as half-priced beer and wine and select cocktail specials from the bar. Diverse ranges of live music provide the entertainment, including Latin-inspired, tropical discotheque; Japanese pop/rock; and pure, classic country. For the inaugural happy hour, three local DJ’s will collaborate and battle with each other, providing new interpretations of feel-good summertime hits while the sun sets on D.C skyline.

Hint for the Average Socialite: Events are FREE and open to the general public. No tickets required. Must be 21 or older to purchase and consume alcoholic beverages.

Kennedy Center x Frank Brown & DC Millennials with Port City Brewing Co.
June 13, 2019
Records on the Rooftop is a creative collaboration of musical and visual vibes. Three of D.C.’s top DJs set the scene mixing summer feel good hits atop one of D.C.’s most unique rooftops.

SOLSTICE SATURDAY AT THE NATIONAL MUSEUM OF THE AMERICAN INDIAN, DC
Jun

SOLSTICE SATURDAY AT THE NATIONAL MUSEUM OF THE AMERICAN INDIAN, DC

  • National Museum of the American Indian (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Deets: The Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian celebrates the first Saturday of summer—Solstice Saturday—beginning with an afternoon of Andean music, dance and family-friendly activities celebrating the Great Inka Road. At 7 p.m., the celebration becomes the Solstice Illuminated Dance Party, taking place on the museum’s Welcome Plaza. There will be a DJ, refreshments, fun and food and all the galleries will be open throughout the evening.

The festivities showcase “The Great Inka Road: Engineering an Empire.” This first major bilingual exhibition on the South American civilization explores why the construction of the Inka Road more than 500 years ago stands as one of the world’s greatest engineering feats. Without access to iron, in mountains too steep for wheeled transport or stock animals to pull heavy loads, the Inka built a road network the length of the Andes, linking the headwaters of the Amazon Basin and the Pacific Coast. (The museum uses the spelling Inka, rather than the more common Inca, because it is consistent with the Indigenous Quechua and Aymara languages.)

Hint for the Average Socialite: The festival is free, but people can also register and check in at the event to receive a glow stick.

3–7 p.m.—Solstice Saturday: Celebrate the Sun!

The museum’s second annual Solstice Saturday opens with traditional Bolivian dancing by Tradiciones Bolivianas, Tinkus Llajtaymanta and Centro Cultural Bolivia, and music by Tarqueada VA USA. Visitors can make their own Andean fan based on the “chakana” (a symbol indicating the four cardinal directions) and add luminescent embellishments to show off later in the evening. They can get inspired by the solar and lunar imagery throughout the museum and decorate their own canvas bag to take home.

 7–9:30 p.m.—Solstice Illuminated Dance Party

Visitors can grab a glow stick and dance to a DJ on the Welcome Plaza. Local food trucks and the museum’s Mitsitam Café Espresso Bar will be available with food and drink to purchase. The museum’s membership table will offer a special gift with a museum member card or with new membership that evening. The indoor galleries will also be open through the night. When the sun goes down, visitors can bring their luminescent fan and join a “Comparsa Iluminada”—an illuminated procession—from the festivities to an outdoor gathering on the Welcome Plaza.
