DESERT X ART EXHIBITION, COACHELLA VALLEY

#desertx

#desertx

Deets: A site specific contemporary art exhibition in the Coachella Valley, Feb. 9 — Apr. 21, 2019.

Desert X Art Exhibition is a site-specific exhibition that first took place in the spring of 2017. Artists from different parts of the world were invited to make work in response to the unique conditions of the Coachella Valley. Contemporary artists - like the writers, architects, musicians and others before them – were invited to project their vision and to create from the extraordinary natural and social history around them objects and experiences that reflect upon the matchless spectacle of the geologic epic, the radical abstraction of the surroundings and the singular incursions of man into the seemingly barren landscape. Unique in that it takes the landscape itself as its exhibition space, desert x offers the opportunity to explore both the familiar and the unknown through the eyes of others. If the desert is indeed god without man, then Desert X is art without constraint.

SHAZAM PREMIERE, LA

@ShazamMovie

@ShazamMovie

When: Thursday, March 28, 2019

Hot Spot: Los Angeles, CA (Location on MEMBERS ONLY)

Deets: David F. Sandberg (“Annabelle: Creation”) directs New Line Cinema’s “Shazam!,” the origin story that stars Zachary Levi (TV’s “Chuck”) as the titular DC Super Hero, along with Asher Angel (TV’s “Andi Mack”) as Billy Batson, and Mark Strong (the “Kingsman” movies) in the role of Super-Villain Dr. Thaddeus Sivana. Peter Safran (upcoming “Aquaman,” “The Conjuring” and “Annabelle” films) serves as the film’s producer. We all have a superhero inside us, it just takes a bit of magic to bring it out.

In Billy Batson’s (Angel) case, by shouting out one word—SHAZAM!—this streetwise 14-year-old foster kid can turn into the adult Super Hero Shazam (Levi), courtesy of an ancient wizard. Still a kid at heart—inside a ripped, godlike body—Shazam revels in this adult version of himself by doing what any teen would do with superpowers: have fun with them! Can he fly? Does he have X-ray vision? Can he shoot lightning out of his hands? Can he skip his social studies test? Shazam sets out to test the limits of his abilities with the joyful recklessness of a child. But he’ll need to master these powers quickly in order to fight the deadly forces of evil controlled by Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Strong).

“Shazam!” also stars Jack Dylan Grazer (“IT”) as Billy’s best friend and ultimate superhero enthusiast, Freddy, part of the foster family that includes Mary, played by Grace Fulton (“Annabelle: Creation”); Darla, played by Faithe Herman (TV’s “This is Us”); Eugene, played by Ian Chen (TV’s “Fresh Off the Boat”); and Pedro, played by Jovan Armand (TV’s “Hawaii Five-O”). Cooper Andrews (TV’s “The Walking Dead”) and Marta Milans (TV’s “Killer Women”) play foster parents Victor and Rosa Vasquez, with Oscar nominee Djimon Hounsou (“Blood Diamond”) as the Wizard.

Firmly set in the DC universe but with his own distinctly fun, family-centric tone, the screenplay is by Henry Gayden, story by Gayden and Darren Lemke. Shazam was created by Bill Parker and C.C. Beck. Christopher Godsick, Jeffrey Chernov, Dwayne Johnson, Dany Garcia and Hiram Garcia serve as executive producers. Sandberg’s creative team includes his “Annabelle: Creation” director of photography Maxime Alexandre, production designer Jennifer Spence, editor Michel Aller and costume designer Leah Butler.

A New Line Cinema production, “Shazam!” is set for release on April 5, 2019. It will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

Who You May Spot: Zachary Levi, Jack Dylan Grazer, Grace Fulton, Faithe Herman, Ian Chen, Jovan Armand, Cooper Andrews, Marta Milans, Djimon Hounsou

Since relocating to its permanent home at the HITS Desert Park, the expansive equestrian center welcomes back festivalgoers with a newly redesigned all grass layout spanning 3 football fields, featuring new carnival style games and exhilarating amusement park thrills, with continued involvement from the biggest names in entertainment and consumer lifestyle, including the return of iconic denim inventor, the Levi’s® Brand, back to headline the event for its fifth consecutive year. Award-winning Australian self-tanning brand, Bondi Sands makes a splash as they enter the U.S. market by activating at this year’s carnival, including a fully branded bumper car installation emblazoned with neon signs and photo booth fun, in addition to hosting a water race game with branded balloons and more. Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures joins the revelry to celebrate the first-ever live-action Pokémon movie, “POKÉMON Detective Pikachu,” starring Ryan Reynolds as Detective Pikachu and set for worldwide release beginning May 10th, with plans including rides on an electrifying POKÉMON Detective Pikachu themed Ferris Wheel and a chance to catch a photo op with the unique Pokémon. Wristband pick-up will be hosted by HEIMAT Los Angeles, while also kicking off their on-site Neon Carnival presence with an integrated HEIMAT VIP lounge experience. Los Angeles beer staple, Golden Road Brewery will be providing a unique bar activation bringing in their customized freight container serving up their most popular brews. New-media Company and digital platform for creative leaders, Future Party, will help curate the guestlist for weekend 1. No strangers to the nightlife scene, Hollywood heavy hitter DJs Kayper, DJ Ruckus and a special guest performance will keep partygoers dancing with performances that last into the early morning hours.

POPPY FESTIVAL, LA

@CAPoppyFest

@CAPoppyFest

Deets: Lancaster boasts one of California's most abundant crops of the vibrant poppies that are the state flower. For several years, the City of Lancaster co-sponsored the Wildflower Information Center with the Lancaster Woman's Club to cater to the interests of thousands of visitors who flocked to the Antelope Valley for a glimpse of these brilliant, beautiful flowers. Held at the Lancaster Museum/Art Gallery, visitors could pick up free wildflower maps and learn about the best viewing locations before heading out to the Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve.

It seemed only natural to create an even larger event to welcome and introduce visitors to the Lancaster area. The annual Festival plays host to the colorful poppies, which are an Antelope Valley springtime attraction.

The California Poppy Festival™ also began in part as a portion of the Earth Day celebration. Since the Golden California Poppy blooms each year around the time of Earth Day, it seemed appropriate for Lancaster to combine the two events into the California Poppy Festival™. The first Earth Day was held in the spring of 1970 with an estimated 20 million people participating worldwide. Through the years, the annual Earth Day celebration has grown in popularity; in 1990 an estimated 200 million people in 141 countries participated in different celebrations. The California Poppy Festival™ carries on the Earth Day tradition of concern and caring for the environment.

With hundreds of exhibits and not-to-be-missed performances, you'll want to make the most of your time at the Poppy Festival. They’ve compiled the expertise of seasoned festival-goers to let you know the tips for getting the most from your visit.

Dress in layers and wear comfortable shoes. With more than 55 acres of activities, you are definitely going to get your fair share of exercise as you explore the Festival. While we hope for sunny warm skies, spring weather can be unpredictable, and it is good to be prepared for brisk breezes and stormy skies.

Sunscreen and sunglasses. While the sun is responsible for our beautiful, blooming poppies it can be harmful to your skin and eyes, so cover up!

Eat, drink and relax. While you are probably eager to take in everything the festival has to offer, pace yourself. Family-fun is at the heart of the Poppy Festival, and that means taking time to sit down, enjoy performers and mouth-watering delicacies. Antelope Valley visitors often forget that we live in a desert environment, so be sure to drink a lot of water.

For more things to do while visiting the City of Lancaster click here to visit the Destination Lancaster website. For a list of accommodations available, please click here.

So that the festival is safe and fun for everyone it is a must that you leave pets, alcoholic beverages, skateboards, bicycles, scooters, radios, roller-blades, frisbees, tables and coolers at home. For your safety, bags are subject to inspection by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. Unauthorized sales, solicitations and distributions are prohibited. Springtime weather in the Antelope Valley is very unpredictable - please dress accordingly and bring plenty of sunscreen.

All City of Lancaster community events are gang free, no colors events. (Ordinance 953, Section 9.18.010)

THE 77TH GOLDEN GLOBE AWARDS, LA

@GoldenGlobes

@GoldenGlobes

Deets: The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), dick clark productions (dcp), and NBC will present the 77th Annual Golden Globe Awards on January 5, 2020.

Produced by dcp in association with the HFPA, the Golden Globe Awards are viewed in more than 220 countries and territories worldwide and are one of the few awards ceremonies to include both motion picture and television achievements. Licensing fees obtained from the Golden Globe Awards have enabled the HFPA to support over 80 nonprofit entertainment-related organizations, including educational institutions with scholarships to underrepresented students, film preservation organizations, journalistic organizations committed to freedom of speech, as well as organizations that support disaster relief and humanitarian crises.

NBC’s 2019 Golden Globes telecast, hosted by Andy Samberg and Sandra Oh (5.2 rating in adults 18-49, 18.6 million viewers overall) generated a 10-month high among all primetime entertainment programs, delivering the most viewers at that point for any non-sports telecast on a broadcast or cable network since the prior year’s Academy Awards (26.6 million on March 4, 2018). The 2019 telecast went up 4% year to year (5.0 vs. 5.2) while retaining 98% of last year’s total viewer average.

“The HFPA Presents: Globes Red Carpet Live,” the official red-carpet pre-show for the 76th Annual Golden Globe® Awards, garnered over 3 million views.

About the Hollywood Foreign Press Association
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) was founded in 1943 as the Hollywood Foreign Correspondents Association (HFCA) by a group of entertainment journalists representing world media in Hollywood, who realized the need to unite and organize to gain the recognition and access to studios and talent accorded to the domestic press. All qualified journalists were accepted, with the bold goal of “Unity Without Discrimination of Religion or Race.” A year later, the HFCA created the Golden Globe Awards which, to this day, the entire membership selects, votes on and awards every year for outstanding achievements in motion pictures and television. Members of the HFPA represent 56 countries with a combined readership of 250 million in some of the world’s most respected publications. Each year, the organization holds the third most watched awards show on television, the Golden Globe® Awards, which has enabled the organization to donate more than $33 million to 80 entertainment-related charities, film restoration, scholarship programs and humanitarian efforts over the last 25 years. For more information, please visit www.GoldenGlobes.com and follow us on Twitter (@GoldenGlobes), Instagram (@GoldenGlobes), and Facebook (www.facebook.com/GoldenGlobes).

Steven Spielberg, who directed all four previous films, will helm the as-yet-untitled project with star Harrison Ford reprising his iconic role. Franchise veterans Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall will produce.
“Indiana Jones is one of the greatest heroes in cinematic history, and we can’t wait to bring him back to the screen in 2021,” said Alan Horn, Chairman, The Walt Disney Studios. “It’s rare to have such a perfect combination of director, producers, actor and role, and we couldn’t be more excited to embark on this adventure with Harrison and Steven.”

Famed archaeologist and explorer Indiana Jones was introduced in 1981’s Raiders of the Lost Ark – one of AFI’s 100 Greatest American Films of All Time – and later thrilled audiences in 1984’s Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, 1989’s Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, and 2008’s Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. The four films have brought in nearly $2 billion at the global box office.

@UsMovie

Hot Spot: Los Angeles, CA (Location on Members Only)

Deets: After sending shockwaves across contemporary culture and setting a new standard for provocative, socially-conscious horror films with his directorial debut, Get Out, Academy Award®-winning visionary Jordan Peele returns with another original nightmare that he has written, directed and produced.

Set in present day along the iconic Northern California coastline, Us, from Monkeypaw Productions, stars Oscar® winner Lupita Nyong’o as Adelaide Wilson, a woman returning to her beachside childhood home with her husband, Gabe (Black Panther’s Winston Duke), and their two children (Shahadi Wright Joseph, Evan Alex) for an idyllic summer getaway.

Haunted by an unexplainable and unresolved trauma from her past and compounded by a string of eerie coincidences, Adelaide feels her paranoia elevate to high-alert as she grows increasingly certain that something bad is going to befall her family.

After spending a tense beach day with their friends, the Tylers (Emmy winner Elisabeth Moss, Tim Heidecker, Cali Sheldon, Noelle Sheldon), Adelaide and her family return to their vacation home. When darkness falls, the Wilsons discover the silhouette of four figures holding hands as they stand in the driveway. Us pits an endearing American family against a terrifying and uncanny opponent: doppelgängers of themselves.

Writer and director Peele produces for his Monkeypaw Productions alongside Sean McKittrick, Jason Blum, and Monkeypaw’s Ian Cooper.

But unlike most teenagers, she spends much of her time living in a hospital as a cystic fibrosis patient. Her life is full of routines, boundaries and self-control -- all of which is put to the test when she meets an impossibly charming fellow CF patient named Will Newman (Cole Sprouse). There’s an instant flirtation, though restrictions dictate that they must maintain a safe distance between them. As their connection intensifies, so does the temptation to throw the rules out the window and embrace that attraction. 4TH ANNUAL MAKE MARCH MATTER, LA

1133675849.jpg

Deets: Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA) launched its fourth annual Make March Matter campaign Monday. Actor and longtime CHLA friend Chris Pine joined the hospital to kick off the campaign, which has attracted the commitment of businesses in Los Angeles and the Coachella Valley. The month-long community fundraising drive is helping local businesses rally community participation to raise $1 million in the month of March to support children’s health in Los Angeles and surrounding communities.

“This campaign is a much-anticipated event for our hospital and our community because it embodies our shared commitment to improving the health of children” states CHLA President and CEO Paul Viviano. “For 31 days people can improve access to health care for children by participating in very accessible ways that make a difference, like buying a latte at a local coffee shop, sharing a meal with family and friends at a local restaurant, shopping at a favorite retailer, and more.”

Each year, CHLA treats children who face a broad range of health issues, from common illnesses to traumas to chronic diseases. The hospital is also dedicated to innovation, supporting advances in research designed to improve pediatric health outcomes and partnering with physicians across the nation to bring the best care here to children in Los Angeles.

Last year, Southern California business and corporate partners helped the campaign exceed its $1 million goal, raising a total of $2 million to aid in funding life-saving care for children in Los Angeles.

Corporate Partners
Corporations across the southland have agreed to support community members in giving back. Each business has selected a unique way to contribute to the campaign’s collective impact—some sell specific items with proceeds supporting CHLA patients, others devote a portion of overall sales for the entire month and still others create their own unique fundraising campaigns to galvanize their employees and consumers to contribute.

By visiting, shopping and dining with a business supporting #MakeMarchMatter, individuals can activate donations to support the care of patients at CHLA. For a full list of businesses supporting the campaign in Los Angeles and the Coachella Valley, visit www.MakeMarchMatter.org/partners.

Make March Matter

Make March Matter is an annual fundraising campaign that builds awareness and support for children’s health in Los Angeles. The campaign supports Children’s Hospital Los Angeles—a nonprofit pediatric academic medical center dedicated to offering more than 350 specialty programs and services to help the health of children. The goal of the campaign is to raise money in support of Children’s Hospital Los Angeles to ensure that all of its pediatric patients receive the critical lifesaving care they need.

 About Children’s Hospital Los Angeles

Children’s Hospital Los Angeles is a nonprofit pediatric health care organization dedicated to creating hope and building healthier futures for children. Founded in 1901, CHLA is one of the nation’s leading children’s hospitals and is acknowledged worldwide for its leadership in pediatric and adolescent health. We are so excited to welcome 2019 Oscar nominee Spike Lee, back to Book Soup to sign copies of the book chronicling his seminal debut, “Do the Right Thing”.

About Spike Lee: Do the Right Thing
Celebrating 25 years since its seminal debut, "Do The Right Thing" remains one of the most important films of its era. Employing director Spike Lee's hometown of Brooklyn as the essential setting, this explosive film masterfully explores race and class relationships. Both a critical and popular success, "Do The Right Thing" became a landmark film that brought serious issues in the African American community to light and established Lee as a major director in American cinema. Lee also wrote the screenplay, produced, and even starred in this deeply personal film, which was applauded for its commanding visuals provided by Danny Aiello and John Turturro, and an assertive soundtrack featuring Public Enemy's "Fight the Power."

About the author:
Spike Lee is an American film director, producer, writer, and actor. His production company, 40 Acres and a Mule Filmworks, has produced over 35 films since 1983. Spike Lee is also a three time Oscar nominee this year, garnering nominations for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay for BlacKkKlansman.

BlacKkKlansman is the 2018 American biographical crime comedy-drama film directed by Spike Lee and written by Charlie Wachtel, David Rabinowitz, Kevin Willmott, and Lee, based on the 2014 memoir Black Klansman by Ron Stallworth.
