Deets: The Climate Museum, the first museum in the nation dedicated to climate change, has opened its latest exhibition in SoHo, THE END OF FOSSIL FUEL. Located at 105 Wooster Street in Manhattan, the show features exhibits that educate visitors about the fossil fuel industry and the intertwined histories of inequality and the climate crisis, and that invite visitors to connect and take action.

The exhibition’s lead artist is R. Gregory Christie, a celebrated illustrator who is an NAACP Image Award winner, a six-time Coretta Scott King Honor recipient, and a Caldecott Honor winner. The show features Christie’s 45-foot mural Making Tomorrow, which envisions the struggle for, and transition to, climate justice.

In addition to the artwork by Christie, the exhibition includes:

  • A series of exhibits that dive into the origins of the fossil fuel industry and its creation and exploitation of racially defined sacrifice zones and aggressive use of deception, on one hand, and inspiring subjects like the remarkable history of the environmental and climate justice movement and the existence of a (currently silent) supermajority for climate justice in the US, on the other;

  • Interactive maps of New York City, the U.S., and the world visualizing the connections between the climate crisis and social inequality;

  • A sticker wall where visitors commit to specific climate actions—creating a vibrant community-built installation that builds collective momentum for addressing both the climate crisis and the inequalities with which it is bound up;

  • A station where visitors can write postcards that the Museum mails and reflections they share on a large visitor reflection wall;

  • A children’s activity station with books about climate justice and materials to draw an imagined future; and

  • A reading corner for adults with a selection of books and articles on the climate crisis, the fossil fuel industry, and the climate justice movement.

Hint for the Average Socialite: The exhibition opened on October 7, 2023 and will welcome visitors through April 28, 2024. Admission is free and open to the public, between the hours of 1pm to 6pm, Wednesday through Sunday. During the run of the show, the Museum will also present free public programs, youth programs, community events, and more.

Deets: Gordon Parks. Jean-Michel Basquiat. Lorna Simpson. Kehinde Wiley. Nina Chanel Abney. These names loom large in the past and present of art—as do many others in the collection of musical and cultural icons Swizz Beatz (Kasseem Dean) and Alicia Keys. Expansive in their collecting habits, the Deans, both born and raised in New York, champion a philosophy of “artists supporting artists.” The first major exhibition of the Dean Collection, Giants showcases a focused selection from the couple’s world-class holdings. The Brooklyn Museum’s presentation spotlights works by Black diasporic artists, part of our ongoing efforts to expand the art-historical narrative.

“Giants” refers to several aspects of the Dean Collection: the renown of legendary artists, the impact of canon-expanding contemporary artists, and the monumental works by such creators as Derrick Adams, Arthur Jafa, and Meleko Mokgosi. Immense pieces—including the largest ever by Mokgosi—are paired with standouts such as Parks’s seminal photographs, Wiley’s revolutionary portraits, and Esther Mahlangu’s globe-bridging canvases.

The term also evokes the strength of the bonds between the Deans and the artists they support, and among the artists themselves. Along with examining these links and legacies, the exhibition will encourage “giant conversations” inspired by the works on view—critiquing society and celebrating Blackness.

Deets: The Paley Center for Media announced its latest blockbuster exhibit, The Masked Singer: Behind the Mask! Spotlighting the Costumes That Captivated America. Based on FOX’s hit show, the exhibit will run at The Paley Museum located at 25 West 52 Street starting Wednesday, March 13 through Sunday, May 19.

Throughout its eleven seasons, FOX’s dynamic singing competition series The Masked Singer has remained a captivating television staple and a hit with audiences of all ages. The series’ central concept, disguising its celebrity contestants from head to toe in elaborate costume creations that shield their identities, continues to capture the imagination of television audiences everywhere while generating a virtual social media frenzy of speculation with each new episode.

Framed by a stunning selection of the series' breathtaking costumes, including fan-favorites Miss Monster, Flamingo, Chameleon and Gazelle, video highlights, artifacts, photography, and family arts & crafts, The Masked Singer: Behind the Mask! is a vibrant celebration of the innovative and addictive television favorite hosted by Nick Cannon, alongside panelists Jenny McCarthy Wahlberg, Ken Jeong, Robin Thicke, and new panelist Rita Ora.  The series airs Wednesdays at 8/7c on FOX.

The costumes on display, which helped the show win two Emmy Awards for Outstanding Costume Design, are a vibrant synthesis of fashion, fantasy, and imaginative costume artistry. Each is a fantastical creation, extraordinary in its intricacy, originality, and scale.

The exhibit also highlights the production's painstaking efforts to ensure the contestants' identities are kept secret both on stage and off, including the custom visors and hoodies emblazoned with a "Don't Talk to Me" warning, worn by each contestant. Together they enable the series' trademark secrecy and its enduring TV magic to prevail.

Thursday, April 25 / 5-7PM / Brooklyn Brewery
Friday, April 26 / 1-3PM / 540 Hudson Street

Deets: Salt & Straw, one of the country’s most famed ice cream makers based in Portland OR, is making its highly anticipated official debut in New York City, opening its first two Manhattan scoop shops in the West Village and Upper West Side this summer.

To celebrate the opening, Salt & Straw is hosting two pop-ups:

  • On Thursday April 25th from 5-7PM, Salt & Straw will be serving ice cream floats with their limited-time Passionfruit Yuzu Mochi Donuts & Whey Curd ice cream flavor, at Brooklyn Brewery. This flavor appears on Salt & Straw’s Upcycled Food Series menu this month in partnership with Spare Foods Co, and features their Spare Tonic Passion Fruit & Yuzu.

  • On Friday April 26th from 1-3PM, Salt & Straw chef and co-founder Tyler Malek will serve ice cream outside of their soon-to-be West Village shop (540 Hudson Street). He will serve some of Salt & Straw’s most iconic flavors and will give New Yorkers a first look at their newest flavor, Pistachio & Ricotta Cannoli. Scoops will be sold for $1, with proceeds going to Hot Bread Kitchen, the nonprofit that creates economic opportunity through careers in food.

Salt & Straw was co-founded by cousins Kim and Tyler Malek in 2011 as a small ice cream cart in Portland, Oregon focused on connecting with the community, which is a value they still maintain more than 12 years later. With a significant fan base in New York City — Salt & Straw hosted a sold-out pop-up last summer with lines around the block and collaborated with NYC chefs like James Beard-nominated Mary Attea (Musket Room) and Michael Anthony (Gramercy Tavern) to create limited-time flavors — the forthcoming openings have been an exciting milestone for the brand.

Salt & Straw enters New York having firmly established itself as one of the most beloved ice cream shops in America, known for its monthly changing menus of chef-driven flavors, led by award-winning chef and co-founder Tyler Malek (a Forbes 30 under 30 and Food & Wine Best New Chef). Called “the Willy Wonka of ice cream,” Tyler is known for pushing the boundaries of creativity, and to date has created over 1,500 unique flavors that tell the stories of artisans, farmers, and meaningful food movements, from perfected classics like Double Fold Vanilla, Sea Salt Caramel Ribbons, and Pear & Blue Cheese, to flavors featuring unconventional ingredients such as Turkey Stuffing & Cranberry Sauce, Chocolate Potato Salad, and Don Bugito’s Creepy Crawly Critters made with real bugs.

Based upon recently declassified files of the British War Department and inspired by true events, THE MINISTRY OF UNGENTLEMANLY WARFARE is an action-comedy that tells the story of the first-ever special forces organization formed during WWII by UK Prime Minister Winston Churchill and a small group of military officials including author Ian Fleming. The top-secret combat unit, composed of a motley crew of rogues and mavericks, goes on a daring mission against the Nazis using entirely unconventional and utterly “ungentlemanly” fighting techniques. Ultimately their audacious approach changed the course of the war and laid the foundation for the British SAS and modern Black Ops warfare.
