Deets: The world of Pokémon comes to life!

The first-ever live-action Pokémon movie, “POKÉMON Detective Pikachu” stars Ryan Reynolds as the titular character in the first-ever live-action movie based on the iconic face of the global Pokémon brand—one of the world’s most popular, multi-generation entertainment properties and most successful media franchises of all time.

Fans everywhere can now experience Pikachu on the big screen as never before, as a talking detective Pikachu, a Pokémon like no other. The film also showcases a wide array of beloved Pokémon characters, each with its own unique abilities and personality.

The story begins when ace private eye Harry Goodman goes mysteriously missing, prompting his 21-year-old son Tim to find out what happened. Aiding in the investigation is Harry’s former Pokémon partner, Detective Pikachu: a hilariously wise-cracking, adorable super-sleuth who is a puzzlement even to himself. Finding that they are uniquely equipped to communicate with one another, Tim and Pikachu join forces on a thrilling adventure to unravel the tangled mystery. Chasing clues together through the neon-lit streets of Ryme City—a sprawling, modern metropolis where humans and Pokémon live side by side in a hyper-realistic live-action world—they encounter a diverse cast of Pokémon characters and uncover a shocking plot that could destroy this peaceful co-existence and threaten the whole Pokémon universe.

“POKÉMON Detective Pikachu” also stars Justice Smith (“Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom”) as Tim; Kathryn Newton (“Lady Bird,” TV’s “Big Little Lies”) as Lucy, a junior reporter following her first big story; and Oscar nominee Ken Watanabe (“Godzilla,” “The Last Samurai”) as Lt. Yoshida.

Directed by Rob Letterman (“Goosebumps,” “Monsters Vs. Aliens”), the “POKÉMON Detective Pikachu” creative filmmaking team includes two-time Oscar nominated director of photography John Mathieson (“The Phantom of the Opera,” “Gladiator”), production designer Nigel Phelps (“Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Lies”) and Oscar-winning editor Mark Sanger (“Gravity”). Visual effects are by Moving Picture Company (“Wonder Woman”) and Framestore (“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2”).

Launched in 1996 to overwhelming response, the Pokémon brand is a global sensation that now encompasses a robust video gaming fandom with over 300 million units sold worldwide; the Pokémon Trading Card Game available in 11 languages with more than 23.6 billion cards shipped; an animated television series in its 21st season that is available in more than 160 countries; and over 20 animated films; as well as books, manga comics, music, toys, merchandise, and apps, including the wildly popular Pokémon GO, that has been downloaded over 850 million times and is enjoyed across the globe by fans of all ages.

When: Gala // Monday, May 6, 2019 (6PM carpet arrivals)

Exhibition Dates // Thursday, May 9 - Sunday, September 8, 2019

Deets: The Metropolitan Museum of Art announced that The Costume Institute’s spring 2019 exhibition will be Camp: Notes on Fashion, on view from May 9 through September 8, 2019 (preceded on May 6 by The Costume Institute Benefit).  Presented in The Met Fifth Avenue’s Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Exhibition Hall, it will explore the origins of the camp aesthetic and how it has evolved from a place of marginality to become an important influence on mainstream culture.  Susan Sontag’s 1964 essay Notes on ‘Camp’ provides the framework for the exhibition, which will examine how fashion designers have used their métier as a vehicle to engage with camp in a myriad of compelling, humorous, and sometimes incongruous ways.

The exhibition is made possible by Gucci.

Additional support is provided by Condé Nast.

“Camp’s disruptive nature and subversion of modern aesthetic values has often been trivialized, but this exhibition will reveal its profound influence on both high art and popular culture,” said Max Hollein, Director of The Met. “By tracing its evolution and highlighting its defining elements, the show will embody the ironic sensibilities of this audacious style, challenge conventional understandings of beauty and taste, and establish the critical role this important genre has played in the history of art and fashion.”

In celebration of the opening, The Costume Institute Benefit, also known as The Met Gala, will take place on Monday, May 6, 2019.  The evening’s co-chairs will be Lady Gaga, Alessandro Michele, Harry Styles, Serena Williams, and Anna Wintour.  The event is The Costume Institute’s main source of annual funding for exhibitions, publications, acquisitions, and capital improvements.

“Fashion is the most overt and enduring conduit of the camp aesthetic,” said Andrew Bolton, Wendy Yu Curator in Charge of The Costume Institute. “Effectively illustrating Sontag’s Notes on ‘Camp,’ the exhibition will advance creative and critical dialogue about the ongoing and ever-evolving impact of camp on fashion.”

Exhibition Overview
The exhibition will feature approximately 175 objects, including womenswear and menswear, as well as sculptures, paintings, and drawings dating from the 17th century to the present. The show’s opening section will position Versailles as a “camp Eden” and address the concept of se camper—“to posture boldly”—in the royal courts of Louis XIV and Louis XV.  It will then focus on the figure of the dandy as a “camp ideal” and trace camp’s origins to the queer subcultures of Europe and America in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.  In her essay, Sontag defined camp as an aesthetic and outlined its primary characteristics. The largest section of the exhibition will be devoted to how these elements—which include irony, humor, parody, pastiche, artifice, theatricality, and exaggeration—are expressed in fashion.

Designers whose works will be featured in the exhibition include Gilbert Adrian, Cristóbal Balenciaga, Thom Browne, Jean-Charles de Castelbajac, John Galliano (for Martin Margiela, House of Dior, and his own label), Jean Paul Gaultier, Rudi Gernreich, Guccio Gucci, Demna Gvasalia (for Balenciaga and his own label), Marc Jacobs (for Louis Vuitton and his own label), Charles James, Stephen Jones, Christian Lacroix, Karl Lagerfeld (for House of Chanel, Chloe, and his own label), Herbert and Beth Levine, Alessandro Michele (for Gucci), Franco Moschino, Thierry Mugler, Norman Norell, Marjan Pejoski, Paul Poiret, Miuccia Prada, Richard Quinn, Christian Francis Roth, Yves Saint Laurent, Elsa Schiaparelli, Jeremy Scott (for Moschino and his own label), Viktor Horsting and Rolf Snoeren (for Viktor & Rolf), Anna Sui, Philip Treacy, Walter Van Beirendonck, Donatella Versace (for Versace), Gianni Versace, Vivienne Westwood, and Charles Frederick Worth.

Exhibition Credits
The exhibition is organized by Andrew Bolton, Wendy Yu Curator in Charge of The Costume Institute, with Karen Van Godtsenhoven, Associate Curator. Theater scenographer Jan Versweyveld, whose work includes Lazarus with David Bowie as well as Broadway productions of A View from the Bridge and The Crucible, will create the exhibition design with The Met’s Design Department. Select mannequin headpieces will be created by Shay Ashual.  Raul Avila will produce the gala décor, which he has done since 2007.

Filling a void of readily-available, traditional tacos, Otto brings New Yorkers thoughtful but straightforward California-style fare with fresh masa tortillas and signatures like the now famous deep-fried Gorgon.

Otto's Tacos has been a part of the American Cancer Society community for the past three years, participating in a viral fundraising campaign of making their tortillas "pink" in October to support Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  Proceeds from pink tortilla sales are donated to American Cancer Society's Making Strides Against Breast Cancer in Central Park.

Prior to his hospitality career, Otto was the Director of Production for Livestream, the seminal live streaming video platform, and is a graduate of the film program at NYU Tisch School of Arts. Each year, Otto speaks at the NYU Entrepreneurs Festival, is a supporter of Venture for America, and an investor in several early-stage startups including Launcher, a Brooklyn-based aerospace company. As a self-proclaimed science nerd, he hopes to someday serve the first taco on Mars. Otto resides in the East Village with his dog Indiana “Indy” Jones.

MACY'S PRESENTS JOURNEY TO PARADISIOS FLOWER SHOW, NYC

Hot Spot: Macy's Herald Square, Main Floor, NYC

Deets: This Spring, Journey to Paradisios will be cleared for launch, as marvelous celestial blooms await spectators during the annual Macy’s Flower Show®. This year’s space-inspired floral fantasy returns to Macy’s Herald Square to the delight of flora fans from Sunday, March 24 through Sunday, April 7. Visitors will be transported into a multi-dimensional world of space, adventure and discovery through flora and eccentrically landscaped gardens that celebrate the wonder and mystery of the planet Paradisios.

The show brings to life the cosmic tale of Space Flight Director Lucy Ryder and her discovery of the planet Paradisios – a pristine exoplanet, untouched by human technology and filled with resplendent plant life. Ryder and R.H. Macy IV (a pilot-turned-cosmonaut and the great-great-great grandson of Macy’s founder) set out on the adventure of a lifetime as they discover the planet’s extraterrestrial beings and fantastic flora.

Celebrating discovery, color and wonder, Macy’s Flower Show will blast off into the cosmos with more than 5,000 types of plants, trees and flowers depicting various outer space themes. As visitors enter each show, they will be dazzled by a space ship as it launches into outer space through the roof into the star-filled night sky. As they make their way and explore Paradisios, they will encounter its colorful inhabitants, floating cities, alien technology, and whimsical plant life.

New to Macy’s Flower Show are seven fashion pods located throughout the main floor featuring looks designed by FIT students. They were challenged to create original designs using the following themes: Shining Stars, Big Bang, Anti-Matter, Zero Gravity, Comet Couture, Lunar Landing, and Interstellar Explorer.

Guests can also visit Flower Show partner Sinclair Oil’s DINO, located in the Kids Department on the 7th floor, who is on a high-speed jet pack adventure through Paradisios in search of the Baby Dinos! Nestled between the Golden Lights Azaleas & Red Dracenas you’ll find the Baby Dino eggs and a few curious Paradigms.

In addition to the planetary exploration, Flower Show spectators will have the opportunity to enjoy a host of themed in-store events including floral, food, and fashion demonstrations, celebrity appearances, and more during the two weeks the show is in full bloom.

For more than 70 years, Macy’s Flower Show has delighted generations of floral aficionados with over-the-top presentations of lavish gardens that showcase millions of live flowers, plants and trees from around the globe. Native to many different landscapes, Macy’s Flower Show offers visitors a unique opportunity to enjoy these florals blooming in unison, despite their distinct climatic DNA. Taking root in unexpected settings, such as store countertops, windows and specially-designed architecture, including grand bridges, columns and topiaries, the Macy’s Flower Show is staged in spectacular fashion at Herald Square.

Hint For The Average Socialite: Macy's flower show is free and open to the public during regular store hours.

THE EIGHTH ANNUAL GOLD GALA - AN EVENING FOR ST. JUDE, NYC

The Eighth Annual Gold Gala in NYC on March 2, 2019

The Eighth Annual Gold Gala in NYC on March 2, 2019

Deets: Average Socialite is a proud partner of The Eighth Annual Gold Gala: An Evening for St. Jude that took place on March 2, 2019!

An Evening for St. Jude took place on March 2nd at the Bowery Hotel in New York City. The Gold Gala Committee is thrilled to announce a record-breaking milestone, raising over $1,000,000 for the kids of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital since event-inception.

The Gold Gala is a formal event where New York’s leading young philanthropists join together for an evening of generosity to celebrate and honor the lifesaving work of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Hosted by Kevin Davenport and Annabelle Devlin, the black-tie affair has been deemed one of St. Jude’s leading young professional events nationwide and has increased its annual fundraising goals year-after-year.

This year, over $170,000 was raised at the Eighth Annual Gala. Guests enjoyed an evening of cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, and dancing along with an exceptional silent auction and raffle. Men or Myth returned for the fourth year to entertain the crowd with live music alongside DJ Nikolas James. Amali, Calissa, and Gemma generously joined us this year as our headline food sponsors.

“We are tremendously thankful to all of our sponsors, partners, and guests who joined us on Saturday that helped us reach this milestone”, said Kevin Davenport, Co-chair of The Gold Gala. “A majority of St. Jude’s funding comes from individual contributors, making events like ours truly impactful. We’re elated and humbled to see the Gala grow each year and inspire young professionals to join St. Jude’s mission of bringing a brighter future to innocent children.”

The Committee would like to extend a special thanks to the event’s contributors and corporate sponsors – Tito’s Handmade Vodka, Gabrielli Truck Sales, Metro Interiors, and Ship App – that help grow The Gold Gala’s commitment to St. Jude year after year. Balcones Distilling, Partida Tequila, Brugal Rum, and Harpoon Brewery generously donated as well, and Julia Testa created beautiful floral arrangements and instillations for the venue. We look forward to raising the next $1,000,000 with your support.

Over the past 50 years, St. Jude has pushed the overall childhood cancer survival rate from 20 to 80 percent and will not stop until no child dies from cancer. The hospital is working to drive the overall survival rate for childhood cancer to 90 percent in the next decade. St. Jude freely shares the breakthroughs they make, and every child saved at St. Jude means doctors and scientists worldwide can use that knowledge to save more children. Families never receive a bill for treatment, travel, housing or food – because all a family should worry about is helping their child live.

Hint For The Average Socialite: Tickets were available here! This year's tickets included admission to the after-party taking place at Vandal beginning at 1AM!

WAGAMAMA MURRAY HILL GRAND OPENING, NYC

wagamama Murray Hill | Photo: Courtesy of wagamama

Deets: After expanding to 196 locations in 27 countries worldwide, UK-based wagamama has been winning fans in New York too with its fresh spin on Asian fusion cuisine. On February 6, the wildly popular eatery opens its third NYC locale, this time in Murray Hill. Wherever they’re located, the restaurants develop a cult following, with devotees like Momofuku’s David Chang crediting wagamama for his decision to become a chef. At the heart of wagamama’s success is its egalitarian “Bowl to Soul” philosophy: wholesome, fresh food and a welcoming environment to nourish the body as well as the soul.

To celebrate the Murray Hill restaurant, wagamama will offer its first exclusive dish in the U.S., for a limited time and only in the new location. Available for just one month, the Hot Katsu curry is a fiery version of the restaurant chain’s iconic Chicken Katsu curry, a dish ordered 3.5 million times a year in the UK alone. As a launch bonus, the first 50 guests through the door on opening day will have their choice of a hot or regular Katsu curry served free of charge.

The newest New York wagamama highlights recently introduced vegan menu options and its opening coincides with Veganuary, which started in the UK in 2014 as part of an effort to inspire people to eat more plant-based food. wagamama’s Veganuary campaign runs at all of the restaurant’s locations in New York and Boston from January 7 to February 28, a time of year when many people are looking to make up for the festive food excessesof the holiday season. According to one recent study, approximately 1.62 million Americans follow a vegan diet.

wagamama’s support for Veganuary reflects its commitment to catering to the lifestyle needs of its guests. As an added incentive for diners during Veganuary, the restaurants will feature a limited edition vegan dish—Avant Gard’n—co-developed by wagamama’s Executive Chef Steve Mangleshot and trailblazing UK vegan chef Gaz Oakley. Aka the avant garde vegan, Oakley is the author of two cookbooks and has gained a devoted fan base on both sides of the Atlantic with some 500,000 YouTube fans.

Available for four weeks beginning January 28, Avant Gard’n is a coconut and sriracha vegan ‘egg,’ paired with barbeque-glazed seitan, edamame, grilled asparagus and mushrooms, all served on a bed of sticky white rice, a flavor-walloping combo that proves meat free doesn’t mean taste free.

While wagamama aims for a lively, fun ambiance, where you can step away from the daily grind, it takes sourcing and preparing its food with the utmost seriousness. Chef Mangleshot has created recipes that draw inspiration from the flavor profiles of Asia, putting a modern twist on dishes prepared with the best raw ingredients, whether it’s a bowl of hearty ramen, sizzling teppanaki, steaming donburi or a selection from the extensive vegan menu.

“For instance, Katsu Curry is Japanese comfort food,” Mangleshot explains. “Traditionally the sauce is mild. Ours packs an aromatic punch. In Japan, they modify the dish based on spice preference between 1-10. I dialed it up to 6 for our Hot Katsu as a tribute to the many Indian curry restaurants in the Murray Hill area. In developing our ramen, I took the best parts of all the broths I tried throughout Asia and created our three wagamama base stocks”

In line with the opening of the new Murray Hill location, wagamama is also expanding its drink program by offering new cocktails, a wider spirit range focused on Japanese whiskey (a rapidly growing category), more bottled beers, such as a matcha brew, and a broader sake assortment, including a sake flight.

Among the specialty Asian-twist cocktails, developed in conjunction with NYC mixologist Adam Schuman, is a lychee martini combining vodka, vermouth and sake spiked with a sweet lychee liqueur. The mocktails include a refreshing cranberry+blossom, cranberry juice, cherry blossom syrup and lemon juice, topped with soda and garnished with mint. Plus, the restaurant is launching a selection of eight specialty teas, highlighted by a floral red berry and hibiscus infusion.

Ahead of its time in pioneering the communal table, open kitchen and serving made-to-order dishes as soon as they’re ready, wagamama—the restaurant launched in the UK in 1992—has always emphasized an egalitarian environment where the setting enhances the positive eating experience. Murray Hill turns up the volume on the streamlined décor of handsome exposed brick walls, pendant lighting and sleek wood seating with a colorful graffiti mural by up-and-coming, London–based street artist Woskerski.

Now firmly established in the U.S., wagamama has raised the bar on nourishing, casual dining. Easy and accessible, wagamama is an inviting spot that encourages guests to eat informally and to drop in at any time—to unwind after work, for a girls’ night out, after the gym, for a weeknight family dinner or with a party of 18. Murray Hill joins wagamama locations in NoMad and the East Village in New York and three in Boston. Buoyed by its embrace by the Big Apple, wagamama plans a fourth NYC eatery in Midtown scheduled to open in 2019.

Deets: NYC Restaurant Week is a celebration of NYC’s most fabulous pastime: dining out. With hundreds of restaurants throughout the City rolling out special prix-fixe menus for a limited time, this is your chance to revel without a cause. Enjoy 2-course lunches & 3-course dinners for $42.

NYC Restaurant Week is New York City's original dining celebration and a pioneer in the dining industry. As the country’s first-ever Restaurant Week, it debuted in 1992 when it was developed as a one-time culinary event to welcome the Democratic National Convention (DNC) to the City. Though created to appeal to delegates and other DNC attendees, the program—with 95 participating restaurants—also found a strong following among residents excited to dine at some of the City's top restaurants for a fraction of the usual cost—$19.92 for a three-course lunch—and who wanted NYC Restaurant Week to be a recurring event.

Hint For The Average Socialite: Start browsing restaurant collections, previewing menus and saving favorites. Check back on January 9, when reservations open and the full list of participants is unveiled.
