When: Gala // Monday, May 6, 2019 (FOOTAGE AND PHOTOS BELOW!)

Exhibition Dates // Thursday, May 9 - Sunday, September 8, 2019

Deets: The Metropolitan Museum of Art announced that The Costume Institute’s spring 2019 exhibition will be Camp: Notes on Fashion, on view from May 9 through September 8, 2019 (preceded on May 6 by The Costume Institute Benefit).  Presented in The Met Fifth Avenue’s Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Exhibition Hall, it will explore the origins of the camp aesthetic and how it has evolved from a place of marginality to become an important influence on mainstream culture.  Susan Sontag’s 1964 essay Notes on ‘Camp’ provides the framework for the exhibition, which will examine how fashion designers have used their métier as a vehicle to engage with camp in a myriad of compelling, humorous, and sometimes incongruous ways.

The exhibition is made possible by Gucci.

Additional support is provided by Condé Nast.

In celebration of the opening, The Costume Institute Benefit, also known as The Met Gala, will take place on Monday, May 6, 2019.  The evening’s co-chairs will be Lady Gaga, Alessandro Michele, Harry Styles, Serena Williams, and Anna Wintour.  The event is The Costume Institute’s main source of annual funding for exhibitions, publications, acquisitions, and capital improvements.

Exhibition Overview
The exhibition will feature approximately 175 objects, including womenswear and menswear, as well as sculptures, paintings, and drawings dating from the 17th century to the present. The show’s opening section will position Versailles as a “camp Eden” and address the concept of se camper—“to posture boldly”—in the royal courts of Louis XIV and Louis XV.  It will then focus on the figure of the dandy as a “camp ideal” and trace camp’s origins to the queer subcultures of Europe and America in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.  In her essay, Sontag defined camp as an aesthetic and outlined its primary characteristics. The largest section of the exhibition will be devoted to how these elements—which include irony, humor, parody, pastiche, artifice, theatricality, and exaggeration—are expressed in fashion.

Designers whose works will be featured in the exhibition include Gilbert Adrian, Cristóbal Balenciaga, Thom Browne, Jean-Charles de Castelbajac, John Galliano (for Martin Margiela, House of Dior, and his own label), Jean Paul Gaultier, Rudi Gernreich, Guccio Gucci, Demna Gvasalia (for Balenciaga and his own label), Marc Jacobs (for Louis Vuitton and his own label), Charles James, Stephen Jones, Christian Lacroix, Karl Lagerfeld (for House of Chanel, Chloe, and his own label), Herbert and Beth Levine, Alessandro Michele (for Gucci), Franco Moschino, Thierry Mugler, Norman Norell, Marjan Pejoski, Paul Poiret, Miuccia Prada, Richard Quinn, Christian Francis Roth, Yves Saint Laurent, Elsa Schiaparelli, Jeremy Scott (for Moschino and his own label), Viktor Horsting and Rolf Snoeren (for Viktor & Rolf), Anna Sui, Philip Treacy, Walter Van Beirendonck, Donatella Versace (for Versace), Gianni Versace, Vivienne Westwood, and Charles Frederick Worth.

Exhibition Credits
The exhibition is organized by Andrew Bolton, Wendy Yu Curator in Charge of The Costume Institute, with Karen Van Godtsenhoven, Associate Curator. Theater scenographer Jan Versweyveld, whose work includes Lazarus with David Bowie as well as Broadway productions of A View from the Bridge and The Crucible, will create the exhibition design with The Met’s Design Department. Select mannequin headpieces will be created by Shay Ashual.  Raul Avila will produce the gala décor, which he has done since 2007.

Related Content
A publication by Andrew Bolton with Fabio Cleto, Karen van Godtsenhoven, and Amanda Garfinkel will accompany the exhibition and include new photography by Johnny Dufort.  It will be published by The Metropolitan Museum of Art and distributed by Yale University Press.

A special feature on the Museum’s website, www.metmuseum.org/Camp, provides further information about the exhibition.  Follow us on Facebook.com/metmuseum, Instagram.com/metmuseum, and Twitter.com/metmuseum to join the conversation about the exhibition and gala.  Use #MetCamp, #CostumeInstitute, @MetCostumeInstitute, and #MetGala on Instagram and Twitter.

The show celebrates society’s most pervasive mark makers and rule breakers with a sprawling showcase of work by more than 150 artists from around the world.

Continuing its mission to elevate the artform and defy conventions, BEYOND THE STREETS New York will take over two floors of Twenty Five Kent, a new creative office building located on the waterfront in North Williamsburg. 2019 MTV VIDEO MUSIC AWARDS, NJ

@MTV

@MTV

Deets:  MTV will bring the 2019 “VMAs” to the Garden State for the first time ever, live on Monday, August 26th at 9:00PM ET/PT from Prudential Center. Music’s biggest stars and fans will celebrate the year’s most iconic videos with electrifying performances, viral moments and a new, first-of-its-kind immersive fan experience.

The news comes as part of Twitter’s 2019 NewFronts presentation, where both brands unveiled the MTV VMA Stan Cam, which lets fans take control of their VMA viewing experience in ways they never could before. Using a series of short-form streams on Twitter, MTV will ask fans to decide which stars they’d like to watch, follow backstage, go behind-the-scenes and poll on a live reaction cam during the show’s biggest moments. Last year’s VMAs were the No. 1 most social cable awards show of 2018.

“New Jersey has an incredible music heritage and is home to some of the world’s biggest artists including ‘Chairman of the Board’ Frank Sinatra, ‘The Boss’ Bruce Springsteen, Queen Latifah, Bon Jovi, Whitney Houston, the Jonas Brothers, the Fugees, and Halsey. The list is wide and endless,” said Bruce Gillmer, “MTV VMAs” executive producer, global head of music and talent, Viacom and co-brand head, MTV International. “Now the moonperson plants its flag to celebrate all that New Jersey has given to music fans around the globe.”

“We are thrilled to welcome the music and entertainment industry’s brightest stars to Prudential Center, the City of Newark, and the State of New Jersey,” said Scott O’Neil, CEO of Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment. “Once again, the eyes of the music industry will turn to one of the Top 10 busiest arenas in the world, Prudential Center.  We look forward to continuing to tell the story of this world renowned venue and the positive change it has generated through music and entertainment in Newark and across the State of New Jersey.”

“We are incredibly proud to host one of the music industry’s most celebrated and adored awards shows, the VMAs, at Prudential Center, the home of sports and entertainment in New Jersey and one of the world’s most popular touring locations,” said Sean Saadeh, EVP of Entertainment at Prudential Center. “The star power of the performers and attendees we expect at this year’s VMAs mirrors the incredible talent that graces our stage at the more than 175 events that play Prudential Center annually. This is a tremendous opportunity to celebrate the musical heritage of New Jersey and the Tri-State Region.”

An official sponsor of the 2019 “MTV Video Music Awards” is Taco Bell®.

UPDATE: OZYFEST HAS BEEN CANCELLED DUE TO HEAT EMERGENCY

CITY OF NEW YORK AND OZY STATEMENT ON OZY FEST

Due to historic temperatures in New York this weekend, the City of New York has cancelled OZY Fest. The National Weather Service issued an “Excessive Heat Warning” through Sunday, which happens when the combination of heat and humidity is expected to make it feel like it is 105 degrees or greater.

“The health and safety of New Yorkers is our most important concern, and we are left with no other option but to cancel all large scale park events throughout New York City Saturday and Sunday. We are working hand-in-hand with OZY and others to make this as smooth a process as possible,” said Mayor Bill de Blasio.

After reviewing all options with the City of New York and its supporting agencies, It was  determined that it would be impossible to move the event to an alternate location this weekend.

“We absolutely cannot put any festival-goers at risk. We are so disappointed, and we hope to work with the City of New York in the future,” said OZY CEO Carlos Watson.

All tickets will be refunded. More information will be available soon.

Recap: This year’s secret location was along the waterfront in the beautiful Nelson Rockefeller Park in Battery Park.

The evening’s sponsors included:
- Citi Entertainment
- Chateau Ste. Michelle Winery
- Sofitel
- President Cheese
- Taittinger Champagne

This year's event included amazing talent representing several of Broadways most iconic shows, and an internationally renowned opera singer who serenaded us during dinner.

  • Sydney James Harcourt performed “Wait for It” from Hamilton. (Harcourt was a lead in the original cast of Hamilton)

  • Kenita Miller performed “Defying Gravity” from Wicked. (Miller was one of the leads in Once on This Island and The Color Purple)

  • Desi Oakley performed “She Used To Be Mine” from Waitress (Oakley was the lead in the touring company for Waitress)

Our interview with Linda Davis, one of the three organizers of Dîner en Blanc NYC:

AS: How long have you been involved with organizing Dîner En Blanc?
LD: Nine years

AS: Besides NYC, what other cities have you helped organize or attend?
LD: Boston, Charleston SC, Washington DC have all been launched by our team. We have attended Philadelphia and Paris

AS: What’s your favorite part about organizing DEB?
LD: Working with a dedicated team of professionals who are committed to the essence of what Diner en Blanc is all about ~ bringing a community together for one evening of music, great food and wine, and a sense of camaraderie for one's city.

AS: How do you choose a location?
LD:
The criteria of chosing the location has several elements to it: space, does the site allow us to accommodate at leaset 5000 guests, will it give our guests an exceptional experience by being there, and most importantly, will the oversight agencies allow a "pop-up" event to take place with alcohol, live music and all of the logistics of making the event happen.

AS: How do you keep the location a secret?
LD: Very few people really need to know where the event is taking place. For those who do, they sign NDA's. The location is secondary to the logistics of the planning sector until we get into the minutia of details. I also think there is a level of respect for this event and the excitement of bringing 5000 + people to a secret location that keeps anyone who might know from telling others. Why ruin such a wonderful surprise?

AS: I know you can’t give it away, but any hint about this year’s location?
LD: It's on Manhattan.

Deets: One of the hottest, most coveted summer events in New York, over 5500 guests dressed head-to-toe in fabulous white will gather at a spectacular undisclosed location on July 17th to dine and dance under the stars.

Every summer the wildly popular event takes over iconic outdoor public spaces whose locations are revealed at the very last minute to preserve spontaneity and secrecy to the delight of guests. In 2018 there were 64,000 people on the New York wait list!

Dîner en Blanc has become THE culinary event of the year in the U.S. and cities around the world. A one-of-a-kind global phenomenon, this year over 130,000 food lovers, cultural enthusiasts and fashionistas will gather at an iconic secret locale in 80 cities spanning 30 countries, 30 in the U.S. including several US premieres.

A beloved tradition throughout the U.S., this year 30 cities will host Le Dîner en Blanc, and there will be three US premieres: Fort Lauderdale, Harford and Raleigh. Worldwide 80 cities across six continents will host the event.

Hint for the Average Socialite: Participation in this unique event happens in three stages: Phase 1 is for members from the previous year; Phase 2 is for new members who are referred by Phase I attendees; and Phase 3 is for people who signed up on the waiting list. Guests can register now at newyork.dinerenblanc.com/register.

To maintain the uniqueness of Le Dîner en Blanc as well as stay true to tradition, guests must observe certain requirements and follow a few key rules:

· Once confirmed, each guest’s participation becomes mandatory, regardless of weather conditions. This is a rain or shine event.

· Dress code: elegant and white only. Originality is encouraged as long as it is stylish and tasteful.

· Table setting: All white!

· Champagne and/or wine. Beer and hard liquor prohibited.

The alcohol laws and regulations for most states, including New York, do not allow guests to bring their own alcohol. Guests who wish to enjoy some wine or Champagne must reserve online through our caterer website. However, guests are welcome to bring their own non-alcoholic beverages.

· To ensure that the location secret is kept undisclosed until the last minute, guests meet at assigned departure location and are escorted by a Dîner en Blanc volunteer.

In order to leave the event location as clean as when they arrived, guests are required to clean their area, and leave with all their belongings, leftovers and litter.

Guests must bring

· A folding table, two white chairs, white tablecloth.

· A picnic basket comprising fine food and proper stemware and white dinnerware.

· A catered picnic basket option, which can be picked up on site, will be available for those who do not wish to pack their own. Guests wishing to do so must reserve online through our caterer website during the initial ticket registration.

Deets: More than 500 young New Yorkers gathered at Central Park’s Conservatory Garden (Fifth Avenue and East 105th Street) on Wednesday, June 19, for the 14th annual Evening in the Garden, the flagship summer benefit hosted by the Greensward Circle, the Central Park Conservancy’s network of young professionals. The event raised over $100,000 in support of the Conservancy’s mission to restore, maintain, and enhance Central Park.

A little rain didn’t stop guests from enjoying beautiful views of Central Park’s only formal garden and leisurely strolls through its lush landscapes. Live music and food from some of New York City’s best restaurants made the evening even more special.

Nicholas D’Angelo and Lauren Junge served as the event co-chairs. Serving on the host committee were Alice Cash, Kushal Choxi, O’Neill Dewey, Maximilian Edwards, Alexandra Hancock, Rachel Hunter, Scott Jeffrey, Rebecca Kerns, Joanne Liu, JP Panier, Chelsea Raleigh, Lindzi Rebernik, Chloe Schachter, Courtney Steers, Allie Talavera, Julia Zamorska, Irina Zheleznyak, and Marie Zinn.

“The Greensward Circle, much like the people you see every day in Central Park, is a wonderful mix of New Yorkers and people from around the world who come together to meet new friends through their love and support of the Park,” said Nicholas D'Angelo. “I’ve met some of my dearest friends through Greensward and enjoy all the work we do together to keep New York City’s backyard beautiful for everyone to enjoy.”

“Central Park is the heart of New York City,” said Lauren Junge. “It's where we all go to get away from urban life — to enjoy the outdoors, go for a run, picnic on the lawn, and more! It's thanks to the Conservancy's commitment to maintaining the Park that we can truly enjoy this oasis, all year long, no matter the season. Because of this, I am so proud to lead the Greensward Circle in support of keeping everyone’s favorite park beautiful.”

The Greensward Circle is a group of philanthropists committed to preserving Central Park for future generations through annual support. Greensward Circle members are invited to a variety of volunteer, networking, and benefit events throughout the year. Members receive complimentary admission to Evening in the Garden. To learn more or become a member, visit centralparknyc.org/greensward.

Food was provided by Italian steakhouse Davio's, Latin and Caribbean-inspired Angel of Harlem, seafood favorite Ocean Prime, modern South Asian street food The MasalaWala, and Mexico City-style taqueria La Chula. Georgetown Cupcake SoHo, and Dorée’s Spirited Sorbet Scoops from Erv’s on Beekman provided desserts. Specialty cocktails were provided by New York heritage distillers Coppersea, the award-winning Tito’s Handmade Vodka, Skurnik Wines & Spirits, Torres Magdala Orange Liqueur, Quinn Rosé, and artisanal mezcal Tres Papalote. Spindrift sparking water was also served. The Sugartone Brass Band played live music, with additional tracks by DJ SMA.
