Deets:
Union Square Partnership (USP), in collaboration with the New York City Department of Transportation’s Art Program (NYC DOT Art), unveiled Union Square’s latest public art, Love Continuum. An interactive sculpture by multimedia artist Yoni Alter in association with Artmax/Andrew Logan Projects, Love Continuum captures the spirit of humanity’s most universal emotion and invites visitors to explore different perspectives of the word “love.” The whimsical sculpture arrives in Union Square on Feb. 20, 2025 and will be viewable at University Place Plaza between 13th and 14th Streets through August 2025.

Alter is known for his colorful, out-of-the-box ideas that add a sense of joy and play with scale. Guided by experimentation and semiotics, Alter passionately seeks new ways of creating visual representations, working across sculpture, painting, print, and digital media. The installation is produced by Artmax/Andrew Logan Projects, a Brooklyn-based gallery owner and industry expert in fine art and architectural installation. Together with Artmax/Andrew Logan Projects, Alter brings his artistic vision to Union Square, in the heart of New York City.

Love Continuum stretches nearly 25 feet long and features a dynamic, bold design that beckons viewers of all ages to engage with the sculpture and discover its hidden message. Only from a distinct vantage point does Love Continuum’s bright color and abstract squiggly line reveal the word “love,” symbolizing how love can take on many shapes and forms depending on how one looks at it. And the physical sculpture isn’t the only presence that Love Continuum will have in the neighborhood. Community partners are teaming up with Alter to enliven the art throughout Union Square–thematic, limited-edition cookies adorned with the sculpture’s design, will be available at Newsbar beginning on February 24; disposable cups featuring Love Continuum will also be available at the cafe as of early March. Starting March 15, with support from Gordon Property Group, Alter will showcase an alternative version of Love Continuum in the storefront window at 860 Broadway. This location, once home to Andy Warhol’s Factory in the 1970s, holds special significance for Alter, as Warhol is one of his favorite artists.

Deets: The United Palace is celebrating Hamilton’s 10th anniversary with free screenings of cast-led films, followed by exclusive talks with Lin-Manuel Miranda and members of the Original Broadway Cast.

History
The ornate United Palace opened in 1930 as the Loew’s 175th Street Theatre, a deluxe movie theatre and vaudeville house, the last of the five Wonder Theatres in New York City and New Jersey. Its first act as a movie theatre ended in April 1969 with a screening of “2001: A Space Odyssey.”

With a groundswell of community support and our good friend, patron, and neighbor Lin-Manuel Miranda, movies returned to the United Palace in 2013. Since then we have screened over 100 feature films, from world premieres (“In the Heights” and “Halftime” as part of the Tribeca Festival) to all-time classics (“It’s A Wonderful Life”), to community favorites (the documentary “Mad Hot Ballroom” about local school children winning a citywide dance contest).

We honor the theatre’s original use as a vaudeville house and movie palace by curating screenings of classic movies with live entertainment thematically linked to the film, such as mini concerts, dance performances, fashion shows, or speakers. UPCA partners with Lin-Manuel and his family for many of these screenings, inviting special guests such as Rita Moreno (“West Side Story”), Steven Spielberg (“Raiders of the Lost Ark”), Spike Lee (“Do the Right Thing”), and Hugh Jackman (“The Greatest Showman”).

Our goal is to have the cinematic experience come alive for audiences too used to watching movies on their phones or TVs.

One of our highest compliments came from Robert DeNiro who, speaking before a 50th anniversary screening of “The Godfather,” described watching a movie at the United Palace as: “The moviegoing experience doesn’t get any better.”

Deets: New York City’s home for pickleball CityPickle and Wollman Park Partners announce that the country’s fastest-growing sport is returning to Wollman Rink in Central Park for its third season, beginning April 4 through early fall. In the past two seasons, the installation has drawn 130,000 participants of all ages and backgrounds.

The 2025 season will kick off a month earlier than last year, as CityPickle and Wollman Park Partners worked closely with New York City Department of Parks & Recreation in 2024 to install, resurface and lay the foundation for 14 best-in-class courts that hibernate during the ice season.

CityPickle at Wollman Rink is in partnership with Wollman Park Partners — a joint venture between Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment, Related Companies, and Equinox — which offers an energized, year-round experience of Wollman Rink to New Yorkers and visitors alike, with an emphasis on creating a vibrant, diverse, and inclusive space promoting equitable economic opportunity in the city. To celebrate Wollman Rink’s 75th anniversary, Wollman Park Partners and CityPickle will collaborate on special events throughout the season.

Hint for the Average Socialite: Reservations will be available from 8AM-9PM. beginning one week before opening day on April 4 (with ongoing reservations opening seven days in advance).  Courts can be reserved for up to eight players, starting at $10 per player during off-peak times and $15 per player during peak hours. People can play in many different ways, and CityPickle offers a variety of programming options including group clinics, private coaching lessons, open play, and leagues to accommodate all schedules and experience levels.

The goal of CityPickle at Wollman Rink is to make pickleball accessible to as many people as possible offering 182 hours of daily play, with pricing options for all New Yorkers. CityPickle and Wollman Park Partners commit to six court hours of Community Play a day at $5 per person, which includes a free CityPickle x JOOLA paddle rental. To ensure free access to pickleball, CityPickle will continue to prioritize robust nonprofit programming.

Deets: For the 2025 Roof Garden Commission, Jennie C. Jones (born 1968, Cincinnati, Ohio) will produce Ensemble. Only her second outdoor sculptural installation, the project will explore the sonic potential of stringed instruments as well as their formal possibilities. In the artist's unique response to modernism, these acoustic sculptures propose the line of the string as a proxy for art history, unbroken and continuous.

In her paintings, sculptures, works on paper, installations, and audio compositions, Jones uses sound to respond to the legacy of minimalism and to modernism itself. Drawing on her immersion in Black improvisation and avant-garde music, she deploys sound and listening as important conceptual elements of her practice, from the acoustic fiberglass panels she affixes to canvas, which absorb sound and affect the acoustic properties of the environment, to the lines and bars she creates through her compositions that refer to elements of musical notation. Her work across media offers new possibilities for minimalist abstraction, challenging how—and by whom—it is produced.

“Foot Fountain (pink) is an overindulgent creature from my drawings. It first appeared as a small sculpture while I was doing some craft work with my daughter during the pandemic. The original version was conceived for the Tinguely Museum in Basel and designed as an irrigation fountain to water a flower garden in its radiant ‘footprint’—nurturing and connecting with the land it touches. Here on the High Line, instead of nurturing the well-tended gardens, I thought it should nurture and cool passersby on hot days, and share some of its overenthusiastic spirit.” - Mika Rottenberg

Deets: The Paley Museum announces its latest blockbuster exhibit,The Legacy of The Handmaid’s Tale: June’s Evolution from Handmaid to Rebel. Based on Hulu’s acclaimed and Emmy® Award-winning show, which is returning for its sixth and final season this spring, the exhibit will run at The Paley Museum located at 25 West 52 Street starting Friday, April 4 through Sunday, June 8.

Since its 2017 premiere, The Handmaid’s Tale has captivated audiences with its gripping, thought-provoking storytelling. Based on Margaret Atwood’s groundbreaking novel, the series follows June Osborn, a woman forced to struggle and survive in Gilead, a terrifying and totalitarian society that was once the United States. Now as the series concludes its stellar six-season run, visitors can explore the universe of Gilead, where every artifact tells a story of resistance, power, and survival, as the final season premieres on Hulu Tuesday, April 8.

The Legacy of The Handmaid’s Tale: June’s Evolution from Handmaid to Rebel showcases a curated collection of costumes meticulously crafted to reflect the journeys of its unforgettable characters. Visitors will have the chance to see up close June Osborn’s (Elisabeth Moss) iconic red handmaid’s dress, cloak, and white winged bonnet, as well as Serena Joy Waterford’s (Yvonne Strahovski) haunting teal dress. The exhibit also features a selection of fan-favorite artifacts and props that have become symbols of the series, including Commander Waterford’s Scrabble board, Nichole’s doll from Nick, June’s Boston map, June’s Handmaid muzzle, among others. In addition, costumes worn by other pivotal characters—Aunt Lydia (Ann Dowd), Nick Blaine (Max Minghella), Commander Lawrence (Bradley Whitford), Rita (Amanda Brugel) and Hannah’s (Jordana Blake) plum outfit and June’s prison uniform, each representing moments of heartbreaking significance. Together, these powerful pieces honor not only the creative talent behind the scenes, but also the lasting cultural impact of this critically acclaimed drama.

On Tuesday, April 8, the day of the series premiere, The Paley Museum will host a reception and screening of season six’s first two episodes with an introduction by series star Elisabeth Moss. Tickets for this event are available to Paley Members only. Learn more.
