Deets: The 12th Annual Running of the Chihuahuas presented by Pacifico and hosted by Tommy McFly returns on Saturday, May 4! The fun-filled and free event features the iconic Chihuahua races, ice cold Pacifico Beer, a DJ, pet photo booth, and a giant inflatable Chihuahua for photo opportunities. ALL race proceeds benefit Rural Dog Rescue – a non-profit organization dedicated to pulling dogs from high-kill rural shelters.

Deets: DC’s favorite summer concert series is back! Our Sculpture Garden turns 25 this summer and comes alive with musical performances. They will include jazz, Afro-Latin fusion, and more. Concerts will run on Fridays from May 31 through August 9, with a break on July 5. 

The season kicks off with Grammy-nominated Nathan and the Zydeco Cha Chas on May 31. Other highlights include a Juneteenth celebration concert with the Muneer Nasser Quintet on June 21, Caribbean steelpan from Josanne Francis on June 28, and contemporary jazz from saxophonist Brent Birckhead on July 26.

New this year: we will offer rain dates to registrants whose concerts are canceled due to weather. If a concert is canceled, we’ll contact those registrants directly.

On concert days, the Sculpture Garden closes from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. Gates reopen at 5:00 p.m., and concerts begin at 6:00 p.m.

The National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden is located on the north side of the National Mall. Entrances are at 7th Street NW, 9th Street and Constitution Avenue NW, and 9th Street and Madison Drive NW.

Hint for the Average Socialite: To give everyone an equal chance of attending, we’ll once again offer registration through a lottery. The lottery will take place the week before each concert. It will open on Monday at 10:00 a.m. and close Friday at noon. We’ll notify all entrants whether or not they were selected the Monday before each concert. Those who are selected are welcome to register for up to four passes. Registration is required for all ages 2 and above.

A few additional passes will be available at all entrance gates—first-come, first-served—starting at 5:00 p.m. the night of each concert.

Deets: NICE CROWD, in partnership with Events DC, is thrilled to announce the return of the Because They're Funny (BTF) Comedy Festival, a three-day event dedicated to amplifying BIPOC comedic talent. Following its acclaimed debut in 2023, which USA Today named One of the Top 10 New Events of The Year, BTF is back for its second annual installment from September 27-29, 2024, across The Wharf’s venues with performances and events at The Anthem, Pearl Street Warehouse and more. 

A spinoff of the American Black Film Festival, BTF aims to propel a new generation of stand-up comedians to stardom and showcase content in the comedy genre that features people of color. In 2023, the BTF festival garnered a tremendous response, drawing more than 5,200 attendees and 1,000 submissions for the showpiece "Breakout Comedian of the Year" competition. Last year’s winner, Alfred Kainga, was signed by Innovative Arts talent agency and is currently on a national tour. The event also included notable talent such as Tommy Davidson, Yvonne Orji, DC Young Fly, Donnell Rawlings and Nicole Byer.

Deets: Join the National Museum of Women in the Arts (NMWA) for a Firsthand Experience Workshop in the new studio/classroom. These programs bring contemporary artists together with learners ages 13 and up for hands-on programs that combine making, gallery conversations and discovery. 

Experiment with color and texture to make abstract monotypes and sew a luminous, long-stitch journal with artist Jamila Zahra Felton, who explores memory, identity, love, self-care and Black futures. Jamila’s artist books and zines are in NMWA’s collection: her artist book The Deep End: Or, Some of Us Learned How to Swim (2016) was included in the exhibition DMV Color (2019–20). Jamila is a member of Pyramid Atlantic and was its inaugural Gregory Vita Paper Arts Resident. Jamila also blossoms as a librarian and educator and lives with her family in the Washington, D.C., metro area.

Deets: Celebrate and observe the solar eclipse that will be visible all across North America on Monday, April 8! The National Air and Space Museum, in collaboration with other Smithsonian museums, NASA, NOAA, the National Science Foundation, and the National Radio Astronomy Observatory presents an outdoor festival with activities for all ages. 

The event will run from 12 to 4 pm along the National Mall between 4th and 12th Streets. Browse the many activity stations to view the Sun in a variety of safe telescopes, and explore the different educational offerings from Smithsonian museums and partners. A list of partners and detailed map of activities will be released prior to the festival.

The eclipse will be visible in the Washington, DC area between 2:04 pm and 4:32 pm. Maximum eclipse will be at 3:20 pm, with the Sun 89% covered by the Moon.

About Eclipse Glasses

Event attendees are encouraged to bring their own solar eclipse viewers to the Festival. A limited number of solar eclipse glasses will be handed out during the event. 

Beginning in late March, the museum will hand out limited supplies of solar eclipse glasses at the National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C., and its Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, Virginia. Glasses will also be handed out on the National Mall during the eclipse April 8. Solar eclipse glasses are provided by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) and NASA. The museum will share full details on how to pick up a pair solar eclipse glasses on its website March 15.

Deets: Events DC, the official convention and sports authority of Washington, DC, is offering a preview of its celebrated Passport DC event, showcasing performances from eight cultures and countries.  

In its 17th year, Passport DC runs from May 1 through 31 and offers an outstanding array of cultural activities presented at embassy open houses, street festivals, performing arts venues, museums, and special receptions throughout the District.

The Around the World Embassy Tour on May 4 allows participants to travel the world, experiencing food, art, dance and more by visiting non-European Union embassies all day from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

  • 12:50 p.m. - Belize with Poetry

  • 1 p.m. - Indonesia with Angklung Performance

Deets: Are you ready for some egg-cellent fun? Look no further than the White House Easter Egg Roll! This annual event is a time-honored tradition that takes place on the South Lawn of the White House.

Thirty thousand people participated in 2023's Easter “EGGucation” Roll on Easter Monday including thousands of military and veteran families, caregivers, and survivors. Additional lucky guests from across the country received tickets through a free online lottery.

Hint for the Average Socialite: White House Easter Egg Roll tickets are free and are available via an online lottery beginning at noon on February 26th and ending at noon on March 4th. Enter the lottery NOW!

Entrants also must specify the number of adults/children on the ticket request screen along with their time preference. Choose multiple time slots if you are flexible.

There must be at least one child (age 12 and under) and one adult to apply with a maximum of two adults per application. Each household will be limited to one lottery application for a maximum of six tickets.

Email notifications from Recreation.gov will be sent to the lottery winners with instructions for obtaining tickets on Monday, March 11th.

Deets: City Ridge, a new bustling community located along Wisconsin Avenue, is ringing in the most wonderful time of the year with a two-day holiday market and tree lighting, featuring DC’s premier artisan pop-event URBNmarket. On Saturday, December 2 and Sunday, December 3, shop from over 50 carefully-curated local vendors on City Ridge’s historic Great Lawn. Spread the holiday cheer with glitter tattoos and face painting, and don’t forget to write and give a letter to Santa. Savor the best flavors of the holiday season with bites from local restaurants, create your own decor at the craft station, and take a Saturday train ride through Ridge Square. Pose for Instagrammable pics with the whole family to welcome the holiday season! On Saturday, City Ridge will also host its second annual community tree lighting ceremony, featuring a performance from the Children's Chorus of Washington.

Deets: ‘Tis the season to celebrate at National Landing! Join the National Landing BID at The Lodge, a ski-themed holiday festival to ring in the most wonderful time of year. Community members can come to Met Park to celebrate the season with festive Instagrammable moments, activities and bites featuring National Landing’s most beloved businesses. There will be no shortage of holiday cheer and activities for everyone, including a dog bone bar and pet caricature artists, seasonal bites and cozy drinks. 

  • Bunny Hill: For some kid-friendly fun, visit Bunny Hill for glitter tattoos and face painting, and find out if they’re on the naughty or nice list with Santa! Balloon artists, train rides, crafts, and more will be available for our littlest guests. 

  • Blue Run: Families and their pups can stop by Blue Run to treat your four-legged friend at the dog bone bar or pose for a pet caricature. Guests can shop from local vendors and artists at the holiday market, take a last-minute holiday card photo at the ski pass booth, or find the perfect Christmas tree at the pop-up farm.  Local restaurants, a s’mores hut and peppermint mocha competition featuring National Landing’s most iconic coffee shops and more, are just a few of the seasonal flavors available at The Lodge.

  • Black Diamond: Adults can ring in the holiday season at the Ugly Sweater Aprés Ski, try axe throwing, or stop by the Summit Bar for a spiked hot chocolate or merry mulled wine. 

Hint for the Average Socialite: This event is FREE and open to the public, and easily accessible by Metro, walking or biking, as Virginia’s largest walkable downtown. Parking is also available along Crystal Drive.
