Deets: This month, Metro Art will launch a new exhibit, Where You Stand: Chinatown 1880 to 1939, in Los Angeles Union Station’s Waiting Room Gallery.

Union Station stands at the site of Los Angeles’ original Chinatown. Where You Stand: LA Chinatown 1880-1939 invites Angelenos into the center of the vibrant community of families, businesses and associations through historic photographs, oral history recordings and augmented reality. Audiences can explore Union Station’s historical layers, formerly a collection of alleyways, streets, and buildings that was once home to thousands of Chinese residents beginning in 1880. The augmented reality experience component of this project blends historical research with creative website and AR technology to recover the neighborhood of the original Chinatown of Los Angeles. Visitors will be able to use their mobile devices to scan the QR codes on the exhibition to see images designed to repopulate this place with the lives of the people who lived and worked there.

 The year-long temporary exhibit will extend to Fall 2024 and is part of a wider collaboration among Metro Art, Huntington-USC Institute on California and the West, Chinese Historical Society of Southern California, USC Cinematic Arts, and the Huntington Library that will culminate in an augmented reality (AR) experience and associated project website made possible in part with the support of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Deets: Louis Prima: Rediscovering a Musical Icon is a new exhibition produced by the IAMLA in collaboration with the Gia Maione Prima Foundation that explores the life and legacy of Louis Prima (1910 -1978), a skilled jazzman, prolific songwriter, and extraordinary performer. Prima’s music is omnipresent, from film and television to viral TikTok videos, Disney tunes, and hit covers by contemporary artists.

The exhibition examines Prima’s New Orleans background and inspirations, his rise to success, artistic prowess, and his role in shaping two of the nation’s entertainment capitals—New York and Las Vegas. Prima, a Grammy Award-winning, multimillion-dollar hitmaker, was also unapologetically Italian American during a time when such proud displays of ethnicity were frowned upon. He helped pave the path for other performers, including Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, and Perry Como.

Through hits such as “Sing, Sing, Sing,” “Jump, Jive, an’ Wail,” and “Angelina,” as well as personal effects, memorabilia, and rare images, Louis Prima: Rediscovering a Musical Icon will enable visitors of all ages to discover, or rediscover, this groundbreaking performer and true legend of the music world.

Deets: Venice Family Clinic - a non-profit community health center that provides quality health care to people in need - announced today that the 45th Annual Venice Family Clinic Art Walk + Auction will take place May 10 - 19, 2024. Venice Art Walk has rotated locations since the pandemic and will return to Venice, California this year with a gallery and auction. 

The exhibition, featuring the works of established, mid-career, and emerging artists, will be free and open to the public at 910 Abbot Kinney in Venice. Proceeds from art sales help fund the Clinic’s innovative and integrated approach to providing comprehensive health care services to more than 45,000 people from the Santa Monica Mountains through the South Bay. A private celebration for artists, collectors, and Clinic supporters will be held on Friday, May 17, and a post-auction exhibition will extend to May 25. 

The theme of this year’s event is History, Health, and Home to recognize the critical role that building community and a sense of home plays in an individual’s well-being. For 45 years, artists, gallerists, and collectors have helped Venice Family Clinic advance greater health equity by providing and collecting artwork at this annual event. This milestone edition of Venice Family Clinic Art Walk + Auction will showcase the works of over 150 artists who are exclusively LA-based to celebrate the growth of the LA arts scene and of Venice Family Clinic. Selected by the Curatorial Committee, led by Max Rippon and consisting of Elsa Lee Bruno, Eva Chimento, Eliane Gans, John Geresi, Charlie James, Angelo Lanza and Yiwei Lu, the exhibition will feature artworks from Ed Ruscha, Larry Bell, Ed Moses, Arthur Jafa, Alison Saar, Kenny Scharf, Jordan Wolfson, Patrisse Cullors, Sayre Gomez, Paul Mpagi Sepuya, Alfonso Gonzalez Jr., Jeremy Shockley, Analia Saban, Nancy Evans and many more.

Fred Eversley, legendary sculptor and pioneer of the Light and Space art movement, will be honored as the event’s Signature Artist for his impact and influence in the development of contemporary art from Los Angeles during the postwar period. Eversley, who was based in Venice for over fifty years, is known for synthesizing elements from various artistic historical movements associated with Southern California, which are informed by his lifelong studies of the timeless principles of light, space, time, and gravity. His Cylindrical Lenses sculpture is featured in this year’s Venice Art Walk signature artist poster.

For the first time, influential creatives, philanthropists, and celebrities will unite to celebrate the HEART community, as well as honor the individuals that make the Clinic’s vital health care services possible, with the support of The Chuck Lorre Family Foundation as gala sponsor. Longtime supporters of Venice Family Clinic, artist Morleigh Steinberg and musician The Edge, will receive the first-ever HEART Award at the event on Saturday, May 11, 2024 at 3Labs in Culver City, CA.

Morleigh is a second generation Angeleno, dance artist, creative consultant and Co-Founder of ARCANE Space, a gallery in Venice where she gives emerging artists the opportunity to exhibit their work. Morleigh has toured the world extensively with her own dance companies and has made work for many renowned artists including U2, who she has been working with as a creative consultant since 1992. The Edge, best known as lead guitarist for the legendary rock band, U2, is a musician, singer, and songwriter. Morleigh and The Edge recently returned from Las Vegas where U2 have just completed a 40 night run of ‘U2:UV Achtung Baby Live At Sphere,’ the pioneering show which brought music, art and technology together to create an unparalleled immersive live music experience, another first-of-its-kind from the Irish band. Both enthusiastic supporters of the Venice Family Clinic Art Walk + Auction, Morleigh has opened ARCANE Space for studio tours during Venice Art Walk and The Edge has donated photography to be displayed and sold in the benefit auction.

Health and art have been interwoven in the culture of Venice Family Clinic since 1979 when volunteers and artists created the first-ever Venice Family Clinic Art Walk + Auction. The inaugural HEART Gala will take place amidst the 45th anniversary of Venice Art Walk which will feature nearly 200 artists May 10-19, 2024. Proceeds from the auction also support Venice Family Clinic’s programs and services to ensure continued healthcare is available to 45,000 people in need across Los Angeles County.

Deets: Mark your calendar. The LA28 Olympic and Paralympic Games will be here in six short years. The LA28 Olympic Games Opening Ceremony is set for July 14, 2028, with the Games running through July 30, 2028, and the LA28 Paralympic Games will kick off August 15, 2028, and close August 27, 2028. 

The LA28 Games will be Los Angeles’ third time hosting the Olympic Games (previously 1984, 1932) and the first time hosting the Paralympic Games. The LA28 Games will represent the creativity, diversity and youthful energy of the Los Angeles region. 

The LA28 Games will use existing world-class stadiums and sports venues across the Los Angeles region, ensuring a sustainable and fiscally responsible event. The LA28 Games will feature more than 3,000 hours of live sport across 800 events in more than 40 sports. 15,000 athletes are expected to compete in the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Los Angeles. 

The announcement of the LA28 Games dates comes as International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach and IOC member and LA28 Coordination Commission Chair Nicole Hoevertsz visited Los Angeles to review and celebrate LA28’s planning. During their time in Los Angeles, Bach and Hoevertsz met with LA28 leadership, community leaders and city officials, visited sports facilities and watched PlayLA youth sports programs made possible by the LA28 Games and the IOC’s $160 million commitment.

PlayLA launched in 2021 to ensure kids across Los Angeles have an opportunity to participate in low cost or no cost quality sports programming - including adaptive sports – in their neighborhood. The $160 million investment from the IOC and LA28 is the single largest commitment to youth sport development in California.

International Paralympic Committee President Andrew Parsons added, “All of us in the Paralympic Movement are incredibly excited about LA28. We know that the Paralympic Games are the most transformative event on earth. Everywhere they take place we leave a legacy of better accessible transport, more inclusive legislation, and a societal shift in attitudes towards persons with disabilities. In LA we are going to turbocharge that. Change starts with sport and these Games will be a vehicle to transform minds and lives. Change is already happening in local communities thanks to the fantastic work of the LA28 organizing committee. These six years are going to fly by and soon, in the entertainment capital of the world, we will with our friends in LA put on the most important show America has ever seen."

The event marks the expansion of the Kids Mental Health Foundation, as the leading organization promoting child mental health in the United States. The Family Celebration Day for Kids Mental Health will feature activities for all ages, including a storybook reading, a conversation station, yoga and wellness sessions, sports skills activities, a crafting station, a friendship bracelet station, a positivity mirror, and more. Deets: California Wine Festival, a nationally recognized event series, is proud to announce its return in 2024 to celebrate over 20 years of bringing attention to the beautiful wines, foods, and landscapes of California. Founded in 2004 in Santa Barbara, California Wine Festival aims to highlight the best of California’s wine regions and this year will feature events at four top coastal destinations: Dana Point, Santa Barbara, Carlsbad and Huntington Beach. 

Anticipating another successful event season, each festival pays homage to the abundant offerings from winemaking regions across the Golden State, paired with gourmet food selections from local dining establishments, with live entertainment and expansive coastal views. The signature event in each location will feature 200 wines from 50 wineries, gourmet food samples, live music, and picturesque settings with ocean backdrops. 

Each festival commences with a Friday evening “Sunset Rare & Reserve Tasting”, an intimate and luxurious experience for dedicated wine lovers. Kicking off with a sparkling wine reception, the evening features samplings of hard-to-find and award-winning reserve wines and offers tasting room exclusives and limited-production bottles hailing from vineyards across in Napa Valley, Sonoma County, Paso Robles, Santa Barbara, Temecula and more! 

The next day will feature the “Beachside Wine Festival”, an educational event held in the afternoon. The event aims to advance knowledge of food and wine through one-on-one conversations and tastings with culinary and wine representatives descending from California’s most esteemed wineries and local restaurants. Over hundreds of premium wines from California will be available to sample, as well as various craft beers made across the state. At the event, wines can be enjoyed alongside small portions of artisanal cheeses, fresh fruits, olive oil, chocolates, delectable bites from food trucks and more. Live music will provide the perfect ambiance for the day, creating a relaxing atmosphere for attendees to experience all the festival has to offer while taking in the scenery of the California coastline and enjoying the Mediterranean-style weather.

In addition to the wine and culinary components, each festival aims to advance charitable organizations from each event locale. Many of the events will feature a silent auction during the Sunset Rare & Reserve Tasting to benefit organizations including: Sandy Feet Initiative, Surfrider Foundation of South Orange County, Golden Rule Charity and Food Bank of Santa Barbara County.

The open-air installation will allow fans to Fans be able to explore a poetry library representing the new record. Each day the installation will be updated to include more surprises. Fans who can't see the library in person can follow along on social.
