Deets: UCLA’s Institute of the Environment and Sustainability announced they will honor Amariyanna Copeny, aka “Little Miss Flint,” for her work toward environmental justice and clean, safe water at the institute's annual gala, which will take place virtually on October 13, 2021. Copeny will be introduced by award-winning producer, best selling author, and creator of the hit television series, “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Scandal,” Shonda Rhimes.

In 2016, at just eight-years-old, Copeny’s hometown of Flint, Michigan was facing an unprecedented water crisis, which drove Copeny to write a letter to then-President Barack Obama. Obama responded to her letter and visited the city; and in January 2017 the President  approved $100 million to address the problem and improve infrastructure in Flint. Now 14, Copeny continues to advocate for environmental justice in Flint and beyond. She has raised more than $1 million for safe water efforts across the United States, she has partnered with Hydroviv to produce her very own water filter, her work has been featured in media outlets including NBC News, The Washington Post and Teen Vogue, and she plans to run for U.S. President in 2044.

In addition to Copeny, UCLA’s Institute of the Environment and Sustainability’s virtual program will honor actor, musician and activist Jaden Smith, and will include guest appearances by Al Gore, Harrison Ford, Issa Rae, Courteney Cox, Natasha Beddingfield and Sting, with additional guests to be announced.

The event will also feature four current UCLA graduate students highlighting their ongoing research and the university’s efforts to educate rising leaders from all backgrounds and make sure communities most impacted by climate change and environmental degradation have a prominent role in generating solutions.  Marilyn Raphael, the university’s first Black director of the IoES, will also speak about overcoming global environmental problems by providing equitable solutions for minority communities who are disproportionately negatively affected by climate change.

In previous years, UCLA’s Institute of the Environment and Sustainability’s annual gala celebrations have been in-person, formal affairs. Past honorees include Al Gore, Van Jones, Jeff Skoll, Ted Sarandos, Barbra Streisand, Gisele Bündchen, Paul Allen, Eric and Wendy Schmidt, Keely and Pierce Brosnan, and Lyn and Norman Lear. Past musical performers include Lauryn Hill, CeeLo Green and Jackson Browne, and past guests include Jane Fonda, Goldie Hawn, Rosario Dawson, Moby, Ellen Pompeo and numerous others.

This year’s move to a streaming variety show opens the event to a broader, global audience, while continuing to supply critical funding for environmental education, research and outreach.

About UCLA Institute of the Environment and Sustainability
The Institute of the Environment and Sustainability moves science to action on the front lines of environmental progress. Using Los Angeles and California as a testbed, IoES promises solutions for the broader world—and our commitment to communications makes sure our ideas are heard.

We thrive on the energy, optimism and impatience of its students and faculty. We envision a future that is beautiful and prosperous in 2050—air, water, food, people and nature. As humanity urbanizes, the story of how we save the planet will be written by cities like Los Angeles, by multicultural universities like UCLA, and by innovators who break down silos of disciplinary scholarship. IoES aspires to be a big part of that story.

IoES has pioneered a unique, hands-on approach to environmental research and practice. Our Senior Practicum takes students off campus and pairs them with clients to solve real-world problems using the science, statistics and communications skills they’ve learned. A similar approach is taken at the graduate level.

Our Doctorate in Environmental Science and Engineering program immerses students in two years of rigorous coursework, then matches them with businesses and government agencies to fuse their thesis research with real work.

With our eight research centers and partnerships throughout the UCLA network, we achieve national and global reach. IoES works hand in hand with groups across campus, such as the Emmett Institute on Climate Change, the Luskin Center for Public Policy and the Graduate School of Education. These cooperative efforts allow us to focus teams of diverse talents on today’s most urgent problems.

Today’s environmental challenges are too big to leave any idea unexplored. They are too pressing to exclude provocative or even unpopular ideas. For these reasons, IoES sponsors events that stimulate public dialogue on topics including nuclear energy, genetically modified organisms and the future of cars and transportation.

There was a time when environmental scientists and leaders had to alert the public to threats and risks. Now is not that time. We know the problems—it’s time for solutions.

Who You May Spot: Amariyanna Copeny, Shonda Rhimes, Jaden Smith, Al Gore, Harrison Ford, Issa Rae, Courteney Cox, Natasha Beddingfield and Sting

Hint For The Average Socialite: To save the date and receive event updates, join the email list below. All proceeds from the event will benefit UCLA’s environmental institute, its graduate students and their work.

Deets: Amazon Studios today announced Amazon Studios VOICES/VOCES: An Entertainment Celebration for Hispanic Heritage Month, a one-day virtual event celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month and highlighting the many contributions to entertainment from the Latiné community. The event will take place on September 30, 2021 and will include multiple group panels and a set from Puerto Rican comedian Gina Brillion celebrating the richness, diversity and beauty of Latiné communities, and conversations that will dive deep into Latiné representation in film and media over time, as well as celebrate the changing narratives and what is to come. The event will be available to stream on Amazon Live and Amazon Studios DEI Twitch.

This event is a celebration and further discovery of the diverse and powerfully rich culture of 60M+ people living in the United States. Together they represent more than 22 countries that have been labeled as “Hispanic” by the US Census.  Yet there is a lot of complexity in trying to fit this diverse, non-monolithic group under any one label. Many refer to themselves as Latino, others feel more comfortable being referred to as Latinx or Latiné. And many identify themselves through their country of origin i.e., “mexicana”, “puertorriqueño”, “colombiano” or through their indigenous communities including, Bene Xhon’s, Yucatan Mayans, etc.

Amazon Studios’ Voices is about diving deep into entertainment industry data, having honest conversations, and aligning on actions to amplify and cultivate stories from historically excluded story-tellers and creators of races, ethnicities, genders, sexual orientations, ages, and religious backgrounds. Each external Voices event dives deep into a community (and their intersections), and highlight data, conversation, and community.  Past Amazon Voices events are available here: https://dei.amazonstudios.com/voices/

MAYDAY Q&A SCREENING, VIRTUAL

unnamed.jpg

When: Tuesday, September 28, 2021

Deets:
Backstory Magazine and The Q&A with Jeff Goldsmith Podcast cordially invite your household to an advance free online screening of the wildly imaginative 2021 Sundance Film Festival hit—Mayday—plus an in-depth Q&A with Writer-Director Karen Cinorre!

An unusual storm is approaching, and it’s about to change everything for Ana (Grace Van Patten). After a short circuit at her workplace mysteriously transports her to an alternate world, she meets a crew of female soldiers caught in an endless war. Along a strange and rugged coastline, men face the stark truth lurking behind damsels who appear to be in distress. Under the leadership of Marsha (Mia Goth), Ana trains as a sharpshooter and discovers a newfound freedom in this uninhibited sisterhood. She soon senses she may not be the ruthless killer they expect, though, and time is running out for her to find a path home.

Unafraid of pushing cinematic boundaries, writer-director Karen Cinorre blurs genres and draws us into the unique realm of her debut, where possibilities multiply and women take control of their own destinies. Both a feminist fever dream and an ambitious reimagining of a war film, MAYDAY detonates expectations to question where empowerment truly lies.

AN EVENING WITH LIN-MANUEL MIRANDA, VIRTUAL

Subscribe to our Free Newsletter to Stay Up-To-Date on Events in your City

When: Wednesday, July 21, 2021 @ 6PM PST/9PM EST

Deets: The eagerly awaited follow-up to the New York Times bestseller Hamilton: The Revolution, Lin-Manuel Miranda’s new book gives readers an extraordinary inside look at In the Heights, his breakout Broadway debut, written with Quiara Alegría Hudes, now a Hollywood blockbuster.

Lin-Manuel Miranda is an award-winning composer, lyricist, and performer, as well as the recipient of a 2015 MacArthur Foundation Award. His most recent musical, Hamilton—book, music, and lyrics by Miranda; he also originated the title role—opened on Broadway in 2015. Hamilton was awarded the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and earned a record-breaking sixteen Tony Award nominations, winning eleven Tonys, including two for Miranda personally for Best Book and Best Score of a Musical. Miranda’s first Broadway musical, In the Heights, received four 2008 Tony Awards (including Best Orchestrations, Best Choreography, and Best Musical). Miranda contributed music, lyrics, and vocals to several songs in Disney’s feature film Moana, earning him an Oscar nomination and a Grammy Award for the original song “How Far I’ll Go.”

“For 20 years In The Heights—a show about a community—somehow manages to create camaraderie and community every time it is performed. This book is a collective diary looking back and shining a spotlight on the people and moments that have nurtured the journey and evolution of this show with paciencia y fe for *checks notes* LITERALLY half of my life. Quiara and I are so grateful that the hundreds of stories and recuerdosthat make up In The Heightsare collected here.” — Lin-Manuel Miranda

In 2008, In the Heights, a new musical from up-and-coming young artists, electrified Broadway. The show’s vibrant mix of Latin music and hip-hop captured life in Washington Heights, the Latino neighborhood in upper Manhattan. It won four Tony Awards and became an international hit, delighting audiences around the world. For the film version, director Jon M. Chu (Crazy Rich Asians) brought the story home, filming its spectacular dance numbers on location in Washington Heights. That’s where Usnavi, Nina, and their neighbors chase their dreams and ask a universal question:

Where do I belong?
In the Heights: Finding Home reunites Miranda with Jeremy McCarter, co-author of Hamilton: The Revolution, and Quiara Alegría Hudes, the Pulitzer Prize–winning librettist of the Broadway musical and screenwriter of the film. They do more than trace the making of an unlikely Broadway smash and a major motion picture: They give readers an intimate look at the decades-long creative life of In the Heights.

Like Hamilton: The Revolution, the book offers untold stories, perceptive essays, and the lyrics to Miranda’s songs—complete with his funny, heartfelt annotations. It also features newly commissioned portraits and never-before-seen photos from backstage, the movie set, and productions around the world.

This is the story of characters who search for a home—and the artists who created one.

Cant Cancel Pride.jpg

Deets: This June, Procter & Gamble® (P&G) and iHeartMedia invite people everywhere to join “Can’t Cancel Pride,” a virtual relief benefit for the LGBTQ+ community, featuring performances and appearances from the most influential voices in the community as well as the biggest names in culture and entertainment including Bebe Rexha, Brothers Osborne, Busy Phillips, Demi Lovato, Gus Kenworthy, Hayley Kiyoko, Jennifer Hudson, JoJo Siwa, Lil Nas X, Marshmello, MJ Rodriguez, Nina West, P!NK, Ricky Martin, Regard, Troye Sivan, Tate McRae and more, hosted by iHeartMedia on-air personality Elvis Duran and diamond-selling singer-songwriter Bebe Rexha, who will also perform her new single “Sacrifice.”

The second annual event will demonstrate that nothing can cancel the heart of Pride and the spirit that the LGBTQ+ equality movement embodies, while focusing on the issues that continue to impact the LGBTQ+ community in 2021, including the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. COVID-19 has not only led to the disruption of many national Pride events, but has also had a damaging effect on fund-raising efforts LGBTQ+ organizations rely on to survive. The LGBTQ+ community continues to face loss of livelihoods, lack of access to critical life-affirming healthcare, increased domestic violence, and social isolation, as many of the organizations they count on for these services continue to struggle for support during the pandemic.

With support from brands including P&G, Allē by Allergan Aesthetics, Dawn®, General Motors, The Art of Shaving and GilletteLabs®, Bounty®, Charmin®, Jared®, Puffs®, Downy®, Tide®,  OLAY®, and Tito’s Handmade Vodka; the one-hour benefit special produced by iHeartMedia and P&G, will stream on June 4, at 9 p.m., on iHeartRadio’s TikTok, YouTube, Facebook, Instagram TV pages, iHeartRadio’s PrideRadio.com and Revry as well as broadcast on iHeartMedia radio stations nationwide and on the iHeartRadio App. The event will be available on demand via iHeartRadio’s TikTok, YouTube, Facebook, Instagram TV pages, iHeartRadio’s PrideRadio.com and Revry throughout Pride Month until Wednesday, June 30.

The event will kick off a month-long Pride celebration throughout June. iHeartMedia radio stations will air spots encouraging listeners to watch the event on demand, share their special Pride moments on social media using the hashtag #CantCancelPride, and support the participating nonprofits by visiting cantcancelpride.com or texting “RAINBOW” to 56512.

Funds raised in 2020 provided critical resources for the six nonprofit partners. The event helped CenterLink provide microgrants to 190+ LGBTQ+ community centers and organizations; supported The Trevor Project’s lifeline, chat, and text crisis services, which served more than 14,000 crisis contacts from LGBTQ+ young people in June 2020 alone; aided SAGE in forging connections and reducing isolation for LGBT elders during this pandemic; and contributed to the National Black Justice Coalition’s federal public policy work and Youth And Young Adult Action Council; proceeds benefited LGBTQ+ individuals around the world through OutRight Action International’s COVID-19 Global LGBTIQ Emergency Fund. In addition, "Can't Cancel Pride" also supported GLAAD’s Spirit Day, the world’s largest LGBTQ+ anti-bullying campaign; and so much more.

Additional proud partners of “Can’t Cancel Pride” include Pantene®, Pampers®, Stop & Shop™, GIANT®, Giant®, Hannaford®, Secret®, Crest®, Harris Teeter, and Winn Dixie®, with more to be announced.
