Deets: Art curator, Karen Bystedt is transforming her Level 6 space into an experiential art exhibit featuring LA-based artist, Ty Joseph. The show includes ten 50” video monitors that will display images taken by the artist in pre-Covid-19 times accompanied by audio clips from the subjects of the photos. As visitors approach each screen it will begin talking to them, almost as if they were approaching a fellow party guest. This experience evokes the feeling of socializing and going out on the town, while also complying with social distancing mandates. The exhibit seeks to blend the virtual world with the real world.

Bystedt gained notoriety on her previous exhibit, Heirs to the Throne, which ran through Black History Month and highlighted a selection of Black fine artists from around the United States. The show featured the work of contemporary art legend, Timothy Washington and prodigy, Tyler Gordon.

 ABOUT THE SHOW:
Social Connecting is a multimedia experience aimed at creating homage to the LA nightlife. The exhibition showcases visuals and sounds of those who frequented the ‘hot spots’ the city had to offer pre-Covid-19, such as Chateau Marmont, Delilah’s, and many more. It is a testament to a dwindling era and maybe to what one might experience again in the future, but at the present, in a twisted way, nightlife is an extinct reality.

Utilizing hundreds of photographs he has taken in the span of four years prior to the pandemic outbreak, artist Ty Joseph reestablishes a way to see and hear the people he was used to engaging with after dark in the zesty Hollywood nightlife. Through the images and sounds of his milieu he shares this experience intimately with the visitors of the show under the current Covid-19 social distancing norms. In this pairing of video and audio mediums, Ty also demonstrates a more current and personal perspective on isolation and the creative process during the pandemic in a series of short docu-films.

The multimedia exhibit is accompanied by a vast collection of Ty’s paintings from the same four-year period. Many of these paintings are a mix of abstract and figurative demonstrations of Ty’s evolution as an artist, shaping a stark and novel identity for both himself and his paintings.

 ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Ty Joseph is a Los Angeles based artist and photographer. He began painting and documenting his experiences in LA in 2017, a decade after his first arrival in the city. His work has been featured in a number of group shows, art fairs, and one solo show in 2018 titled The Meaning of L. Ty was born Tal Ezra Joseph in Hamburg, Germany and grew up in Kfar Saba, Israel. After Ty completed his military service he moved to the United States to realize his artistic endeavors. Following a period in which he toured as a musician settling in Chicago, Ty eventually returned to LA and immersed himself in the LA social scene. Concurrently he completed his education and established a career path in real estate, which eventually gave way to his calling in art. His paintings, accompanied by bold elements influenced by pop art, are what he defines as “a journey into the artist’s identity with nothing but eyes, and sometimes a walking cane.” Social Connecting encompasses Ty’s oeuvre, showcasing a significant amount of his work between the years 2017 to 2020.
