Deets: Thirty years ago, a group of gifted young pianists with a bent towards new music, gathered together to lick stamps. Led by the late pianist, scholar and Schoenberg associate Leonard Stein, they sat at his dining table affixing these stamps to pre-internet postcards to announce their brand-new concert series called Piano Spheres. They hoped it might last a whole season. Music patron Betty Freeman wrote the $2,500 check that was their budget for the entire year. Now, 30 years and a few generations later, these pianists - Gloria Cheng, Vicki Ray, Mark Robson, and the late Susan Svrček have become brilliant lights in the firmament of contemporary concert music in Los Angeles and are bringing the next generation of young pianists along with them. 

To celebrate this landmark 30th anniversary season, Piano Spheres presents ‘30 for 30,’ a special initiative that will commission 30 composers to write new works for the piano, to be performed by Piano Spheres’ Core Artists: Nic Gerpe, Aron Kallay, Thomas Kotcheff and Vicki Ray, Emeritus Artist Mark Robson, Stein Resident Artist Andrés Jaramillo, and Emerging Artist Thomas Mellan. All ‘30 for 30’ composers were chosen by the performers and represent an impressive sampling of local, national and international talent including Thomas Meadowcroft, Donald Crockett, Paul Beaudoin, Paul Morovec, Veronika Krausas, William Alves, Thomas Flaherty and 23 others. Guest Artist Stephen Drury will present a solo recital featuring the complete piano sonatas of Charles Ives on the 150th anniversary of his birth. Also performing will be Emerita Artist Gloria Cheng with guest pianist Ralph van Raat in a program celebrating the 100th birthday of Pierre Boulez in association with CAP UCLA.

Piano Spheres dedicates its 2024/25 season to beloved core artist Sarah Gibson and will honor her memory with a special concert on July 14th, the anniversary of her tragic passing. Gibson’s duo HOCKET with pianist Thomas Kotcheff remains on sabbatical.

Brook and Meadowcroft: This concert features two new large-scale works by important international composers Taylor Brook and Thomas Meadowcroft. Both are 30 for 30 composers.

Islands: Piano Spheres’ newest Core Artist Nic Gerpe will present a range of colorful and evocative pieces which explore the many aspects and connotations of islands. Deets: Rust-Oleum celebrated the inaugural debut by hosting a high-energy evening featuring industry legend, Persue, and rising talent, George F Baker III. The two artists partnered with Rust-O to bring the new line to life, painting it out on the canvas in a thrilling head-to-head spray paint battle at the Secret Walls headquarters in downtown Los Angeles. With only 90 minutes to ideate and complete their piece, the artists faced-off against each other (Persue with artist Emily Ding and George F Baker III with artist Allison Bamcat) in a frantic adrenaline rush energized by the cheers of the crowd. A decibel meter measuring audience reaction — helped to determine the winners of the night: George F Baker III and Allison Bamcat. All of this action was hosted by Nick Major.

Beyond the battle, attendees enjoyed exclusive access to try the new Rust-O spray paint, along with limited-edition merchandise giveaways. The celebration was more than just a launch—it’s a tribute to the art community and a preview of the future for Rust-Oleum’s commitment to creatives and the industry.

Launching on Saturday, March 29, Black Angus Steakhouse is unveiling a brand-new brunch menu with delectable dishes and refreshing beverages to start the weekend on the right foot - available on Saturday & Sunday from 11am-3pm.

Guests can expect an arrangement of new food items that can be both enjoyed family-style or individually with family and friends. No egg surcharge will be placed on any dishes containing eggs. 

Highlights include:

Shaved Prime Rib on garlic toast (prime rib, caramelized onion gravy, garlic toast, 2 over easy eggs)
Shrimp & Grits (Grilled shrimp, cheese grits, hot link smoked sausage, tomatoes, green onions, garlic toast)

Launching exclusively at Universal Studios Hollywood, Universal Fan Fest Nights will feature all-new, uniquely curated experiences inspired by sci-fi, fantasy, gaming and anime. Guests will really go there as they tap into their inner fandom and join forces with their favorite characters while sharing their enthusiasm with like-minded fans. They will also have a chance engage in cosplay (subject to Cosplay Costume Guidelines) while experiencing such renowned favorites as Star Trek, Back to the Future, DUNGEONS & DRAGONS, One Piece and Jujutsu Kaisen. Additionally, theme park favorites, The Wizarding World of Harry Potter™ and SUPER NINTENDO WORLD™ will offer special additions and introduce character and interactive elements during Universal Fan Fest Nights.

Star Trek: Red Alert—Inspired by the Star Trek universe that has entertained millions of fans, this daring walk-through experience will boldly take guests on an immersive adventure aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-D on a mission to prevent an interstellar threat. Guests will find themselves transported to the year 2403, just as an otherworldly entity wreaks havoc on the ship. As the chaos ensues, guests will venture further into the Enterprise, navigating familiar Star Trek environments, from the ship’s engineering room to transporter pads, to the soul of the Starship Enterprise, the bridge—an original set piece featured in the third and final season of Star Trek: Picard—in a desperate quest to stop the perceived danger and restore peace aboard the ship. Laden with special effects, audio-visual effects, multi-sensory activations and themed performers, this all-original experience will create an unforgettable, awe-inspiring moment that will elevate Star Trek fandom to new levels.

Back to the Future: Destination Hill Valley—This nostalgic experience is based on the 1985 Back to the Future blockbuster movie and invites guests to time travel back to 1955 Hill Valley alongside the film’s iconic characters. Time travel begins the moment guests climb aboard the Studio Tour “Fan Tram” and venture towards Courthouse Square, the original filming location for this classic film located on the Universal Studios world famous backlot.

DUNGEONS & DRAGONS: Secrets of Waterdeep—Inspired by the World’s Greatest Roleplaying Game™, DUNGEONS & DRAGONS (D&D), this epic experience will welcome guests and fans to partake in a one-of-a-kind adventure and explore the fantastic world of D&D. Guests will join the Harpers—a heroic spy network—to foil a plot by the legendary beholder Xanathar and save the city of Waterdeep.

One Piece: Grand Pirate Gathering—This unique experience is inspired by the long-running global hit anime series, One Piece, from creator Eiichiro Oda, that follows the adventures of Monkey D. Luffy and his Straw Hat Crew, including Zoro, Nami, Usopp and Sanji, on their quest to find “One Piece,” the legendary treasure of the former King of the Pirates, Gol D. Roger.  The Grand Pirate Gathering will transport guests into the series’ fictional world of pirates through an immersive and interactive experience, complete with iconic visuals and scenic environments that place fans at the heart of the action. Guests will also have time to enjoy uplifting meet and greet opportunities with different characters and as well as participate in themed interactive photo ops.

Jujutsu Kaisen: Hunger of the Cursed—This anime experience, inspired by a widely popular Japanese manga and its anime adaptation, follows high school student Yuji Itadori after he accidently becomes the host of a powerful curse and joins Tokyo Jujutsu High School, an organization that fights the curses. This epic adventure will be transformed into an exciting film-based experience, which first debuted at Universal Studios Japan.

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter—Guests and fans will have a chance to further engage in the theme park’s immersive land with all-new magical creature interactions, including the opportunity to meet the Niffler, a Baby Dragon and grand Occamy. The centerpiece of the experience will feature the visually spectacular Hogwarts™ Always light projection show designed to take guests on a whimsical journey through a school year at Hogwarts. Weaving together unforgettable music and incredible moments of wizardry, Hogwarts Always will shine bright as it comes to life set against the majestic backdrop of Hogwarts™ castle.

SUPER NINTENDO WORLD: Let’s Go, Yoshi—This exciting addition to SUPER NINTENDO WORLD will mark the debut of beloved fan favorite Yoshi as a brand new meet and greet character within the land during Universal Fan Fest Nights. As part of Yoshi’s welcome to the land, guests will have a chance to interact with Yoshi as they engage in a scavenger hunt to locate all five colorful Yoshi eggs.  After completing this original quest, guests will reap the benefit of a very special reward with the unique opportunity to meet a different colored Yoshi. Plus, guests will be treated to celebratory drone moments that will illuminate the night sky throughout the evening.

WICKED—This engaging meet and greet opportunity will feature the first-ever addition to Universal Studios Hollywood of the Elphaba and Glinda characters from Universal Pictures’ blockbuster movie.

The Cécred Roadshow Pop-Up Tour will roll out in seven cities over the coming months, formally kicking off in Inglewood at the SoFi Stadium on April 28th, with stops at all U.S. COWBOY CARTER TOUR stadium locations every night, including Chicago, NYC/New Jersey, Houston, Washington D.C., Atlanta, and Las Vegas.

The mobile popup will also visit select Ulta Beauty locations, in Los Angeles (May), Chicago (May), Houston (June), and Atlanta (July) while in town for the Tour. Guests can immerse themselves in the trailer and redeem exclusive free gifts with Cécred purchases made in-store.

Deets: Venice Family Clinic, a nonprofit community health center dedicated to providing quality health care to people in need, announced today that the 46th annual Venice Family Clinic Art Walk + Auction will take place May 9-18, 2025.  

The exhibition, featuring the works of established, mid-career, and emerging artists, will be free and open to the public at 910 Abbot Kinney in Venice. The artwork will also be available to view online, and bids will be accepted beginning May 9 through May 18. Proceeds from art sales will support the Clinic’s innovative and integrated approach to providing comprehensive health care services to more than 45,000 people from the Santa Monica Mountains through the South Bay. A private reception for artists, collectors, and Clinic supporters will be held on Saturday, May 10, and a post-auction exhibition will extend through May 25.

The 2025 event embraces the theme “Past, Present, and Future,” celebrating the Clinic’s longstanding connection with the local artist community and honoring the rich diversity of Los Angeles’ creatives across generations. For 46 years, artists, gallerists, and collectors have united to support Venice Family Clinic’s mission of advancing health equity by contributing and collecting artwork at this annual event.

Lita and Isabelle Albuquerque, mother and daughter and individually acclaimed artists, will be honored as the event’s Signature Artists. As visionary forces, their profound legacy embodies the inspirational role of family in their work, as in the Clinic's.

This year’s exhibition will include a dedicated section honoring the strength, resilience, and creativity of the communities most deeply affected by the recent wildfires in Altadena and the Pacific Palisades, many of whom are patients, donors, artists, and neighbors of the Clinic. 

This exhibit section will speak to the profound impact of the fires — from the hardship and loss of so much destruction to the accompanying health consequences. This spotlight serves as a recognition of the artists’ contributions during these unimaginable challenges and a gesture of gratitude. It will be a moment to speak about the efforts Venice Family Clinic has taken in the wake of the conflagration and the role art and community play in healing and recovery.

The contributions of Black artists from Altadena, a community with a rich cultural legacy and a powerful creative voice, will be highlighted in this section. This work speaks not only to the current moment, but also to the long-standing histories of beauty, solidarity, and self-determination that continue to shape the landscape of Los Angeles.

In addition, this year's exhibit launches the Honored Gallery Patrons initiative, which recognizes galleries that show exceptional dedication and support for Venice Family Clinic. The 2025 Honored Gallery Patrons are L.A. Louver and Nicodim Gallery.

Deets: The culinary world is about to be abuzz with excitement as Event Founder Shelby Russell and Culinary Curator & Host Neal Fraser are bringing back Southern California’s most notable world-class culinary festival, the 2nd Annual Manhattan Beach Food & Wine featuring an all-star lineup of 40 Best Chefs held at Manhattan Village!

Set against the stunning coastal backdrop of one of America’s most beautiful cities, Manhattan Beach Food & Wine is a spectacular two-night strolling culinary extravaganza with an Opening Night Celebration on Friday, September 12th, 2025, and Grand Tasting on Saturday, September 13th, 2025. Each evening will bring together the industry’s top tastemakers and culinary and beverage connoisseurs to celebrate an all-star lineup of 20 of the best chefs and restaurants each night, illustrious wineries, premier spirits, handcrafted cocktails, craft breweries, curated selection of non-alcoholic beverages, live entertainment, and much more.

Manhattan Beach Food & Wine will be held at Manhattan Village in a 40,000-square-foot outdoor space located at the end of the Veterans Parkway Greenbelt Path. This beautifully landscaped trail runs through Manhattan Beach to Hermosa Beach, allowing guests to walk to this year’s event with ease. Manhattan Village will also be offering complimentary parking and guests are encouraged to use rideshare services.

Deets: Mark your calendar. The LA28 Olympic and Paralympic Games will be here in six short years. The LA28 Olympic Games Opening Ceremony is set for July 14, 2028, with the Games running through July 30, 2028, and the LA28 Paralympic Games will kick off August 15, 2028, and close August 27, 2028. 

The LA28 Games will be Los Angeles’ third time hosting the Olympic Games (previously 1984, 1932) and the first time hosting the Paralympic Games. The LA28 Games will represent the creativity, diversity and youthful energy of the Los Angeles region. 

The LA28 Games will use existing world-class stadiums and sports venues across the Los Angeles region, ensuring a sustainable and fiscally responsible event. The LA28 Games will feature more than 3,000 hours of live sport across 800 events in more than 40 sports. 15,000 athletes are expected to compete in the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Los Angeles. 

The announcement of the LA28 Games dates comes as International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach and IOC member and LA28 Coordination Commission Chair Nicole Hoevertsz visited Los Angeles to review and celebrate LA28’s planning. During their time in Los Angeles, Bach and Hoevertsz met with LA28 leadership, community leaders and city officials, visited sports facilities and watched PlayLA youth sports programs made possible by the LA28 Games and the IOC’s $160 million commitment.

PlayLA launched in 2021 to ensure kids across Los Angeles have an opportunity to participate in low cost or no cost quality sports programming - including adaptive sports – in their neighborhood. The $160 million investment from the IOC and LA28 is the single largest commitment to youth sport development in California.

International Paralympic Committee President Andrew Parsons added, “All of us in the Paralympic Movement are incredibly excited about LA28. We know that the Paralympic Games are the most transformative event on earth. Everywhere they take place we leave a legacy of better accessible transport, more inclusive legislation, and a societal shift in attitudes towards persons with disabilities. In LA we are going to turbocharge that. Change starts with sport and these Games will be a vehicle to transform minds and lives. Change is already happening in local communities thanks to the fantastic work of the LA28 organizing committee. These six years are going to fly by and soon, in the entertainment capital of the world, we will with our friends in LA put on the most important show America has ever seen."
