Deets: This Halloween, Hospital of Emotions is opening a door that has remained closed.

Beginning October 2nd, guests can descend deep into the bowels of the historic former St. Vincent Medical Center for Restricted Access: The Downstairs Experience, a new 30-minute guided immersive journey into the hospital’s previously closed lower level, where a century of lives seems to linger in the halls.

Guests are led underground through original hospital spaces left largely as they were: abandoned labs, old medical equipment, records, specimens and remnants of the lives that passed through them. From there, history begins to blur with performance and the paranormal. What happened here, what has been imagined and what might still be lingering becomes increasingly difficult to tell apart.

The hospital’s existing architecture does much of the work. Old medical and service spaces, corridors and remnants of its former life become the backdrop for characters, sound, darkness and controlled scares. For the curious, the fearless and lovers of oddities, it’s a rare chance to explore the depths of this historic hospital and venture into spaces never before open to the public.

Upstairs, Hospital of Emotions: After Dark transforms the exhibition across four floors and more than 80 art-filled rooms. The art remains, but after nightfall, the hospital comes alive. Lights go down. Characters emerge. Unexpected encounters appear between installations as visitors explore the exhibition at their own pace.

The upstairs experience offers a more accessible Halloween night for families and visitors who want a little less fear with their art. Those ready to go all in can do both.

Full Access guests begin below before emerging upstairs into Hospital of Emotions: After Dark. A Día de los Muertos installation is also planned within the exhibition’s Compassion section, bringing remembrance and ritual into the Hospital’s Halloween season.

Expect low lighting, eerie imagery, sudden sounds, confined spaces, roaming characters and startling encounters. Some elements may be frightening or unsettling. Hospital of Emotions is located inside the historic former St. Vincent Medical Center in Los Angeles.

The exhibition has been extended through January 3, 2027.
