Deets: The Grammy Museum is thrilled to present a screening of the documentary THE OPENER with a panel discussion featuring 2x GRAMMY® Award-winning artist Jason Mraz, multi-hyphenate musical artist Philip Labes, and filmmakers Jeff Toye and Sunya Mara about the creative process behind the film. Following the screening and discussion, Jason Mraz and Philip Labes will perform a brief acoustic set.

THE OPENER is a feel-great story about a street performer who shared his music online to process the grief and isolation of the pandemic and found that it spoke to millions. When his songs reached the ears of one of his heroes, Grammy-winner Jason Mraz, he was invited on his very first tour and given a chance to prove himself on the big stage.

ABOUT JASON MRAZ
Jason Mraz is a two-time GRAMMY® Award winning singer/songwriter and Songwriters Hall of Fame Honoree, most famously known by his hits, “I’m Yours” and “I Won’t Give Up.” His nonprofit, the Jason Mraz Foundation, supports programs focused on inclusive arts education and the advancement of equality. In 2023, Mraz released his eighth studio album, Mystical Magical Rhythmical Radical Ride (featuring the single “I Feel Like Dancing”) and placed second on Season 32 of “Dancing With The Stars,” which aired live on ABC and remains streaming on Disney+. Mraz previously performed the role of Dr. Pomatter in the hit Broadway musical Waitress

ABOUT PHILIP LABES
After years of street performing, Philip gained viral fame on TikTok during the 2020 lockdown, when his gentle folk parable "A TV Show Called Earth" gained him an audience of millions. His online fandom has only grown since, driving a US/Europe headline tour for his “Four Seasons," a four-album folk opus inspired by Vivaldi. On July 4th, 2026 (the 250th anniversary of the founding of America) he will release the cast album of his new musical, Good Guy with a Gun – a political comedy about an NRA lobbyist and his liberal daughter, starring Anthony Rapp, Kimiko Glenn, Chris Sullivan, Yvette Nicole Brown, Richard Kind, Paul Walter Hauser, Kristen Schaal, and Jason Alexander – which will be seeking GRAMMY® Award consideration for “Best Musical Theater Album.”

ABOUT JEFF TOYE
Jeff Toye is a graduate of USC’s film school and the former creative director of Kobe Bryant’s Granity Studios. He was mentored by director Catherine Hardwicke and directed second-unit on a number of her projects, including MISS YOU ALREADY (starring Toni Collette and Drew Barrymore) and “Til It Happens to You” (music video for Lady Gaga.) THE OPENER is his first feature film.

ABOUT SUNYA MARA
Sunya Mara graduated from USC’s film and business schools and went on to write and illustrate at Oscar-winning Granity Studios. She wore many hats on THE OPENER, as producer, cinematographer, and story consultant. She is also an award-winning author of the young-adult fantasy series THE DARKENING and EMBRACE THE SERPENT, published by HarperCollins.

Who You May Spot: Mraz will join Labes and filmmakers Jeff Toye and Sunya Mara at the screening for a Q&A and special acoustic performance.
