Deets: For his first solo gallery exhibition, Jason Naylor presents an expansive body of new paintings in acrylic and spray paint on canvas. In a captivating departure from his well-known street murals that use fluorescent hues and eye-catching typography to communicate bold messages of positivity, Naylor invites us into a deconstructed space between the lines.

While his public art relies on the unexpected connection that viewers can experience in open spaces–where instantaneous understanding is key–here Naylor has flipped the concept on its head by zooming in. This tighter frame provides an intoxicatingly intimate view of the more fundamental elements of his work: the interplay between line, color, and shifting form within typographic imagery–an abstraction that invites extended exploration. Recurring color palettes and an interplay between the coded messages within, heighten the emotional impact. The words themselves fluxuate dynamically between dissolving entirely and emerging in stark relief. By settling into the tension between clarity and chaos, connection and disconnection, which is also at the heart of communication, Naylor has opened a space for us to find a deeper resonance.

During a time when humans are experiencing increasing isolation, Naylor’s work offers itself as a vehicle for hope and optimism. These joyful, vibrant paintings encourage us to read between the lines to find the connection we crave.

Hint for the Average Socialite: Free and open to the public March 13-20 @ 150 Grand Street, Brooklyn, NYC from 12-7PM.
