Deets: The Liberty Portraits: A Monument to the 2024 Champions, a new public art installation by renowned artist LaToya Ruby Frazier honoring the 2024 WNBA championship team, is now on display on the plaza at Barclays Center.

The series, Frazier’s first outdoor installation, celebrates the New York Liberty as professional athletes, reflecting the power of female leadership, influence, diversity, love for the game of basketball and family. Referencing the heroic scale of the Statue of Liberty, Frazier designed double-sided, nine-foot-tall portraits of each player on the 2024 roster presented in architectural display cases —one side featuring a portrait of a player in uniform, and the reverse side showcasing an image of the same player with their chosen family. To make the latter portraits, Frazier visited the players in locations meaningful to them, including spending time with Jonquel Jones’ family in the Bahamas and visiting players in Texas, Arkansas and Alabama, among other locations. Known for incorporating storytelling in her work, Frazier’s portraits also include the voice of a loved one chosen by each player as first-person testimonies on text panels. The Liberty Portraits: A Monument to the 2024 Champions will be on display through the 2025 WNBA season.

A special WICKED celebration on Saturday, October 11, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., features live performances in the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory Plaza at 11:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m., and 1:30 p.m. by members of the cast from the national tour: Natalia Vivino, who played Elphaba, and Hayley Podschun, who played Glinda.

The first 300 guests will receive a free pink carnation! Between cast performances, take part in WICKED trivia and the chance to win special prizes. At the Home Gardening Center, Face Art by Melissa offers face painting from a choice of whimsical designs, open to all on a first-come, first-served basis.

Deets: This fall, a new mode of transportation is arriving in Times Square. Featuring an opulent carriage drawn by carousel-style horses and loaded with 90’s nostalgia, artist Yvette Mayorga’s Magic Grasshopper is a 30-foot-long kinetic sculpture carrying critical narratives of migration, feminized labor, and colonial histories. Designed to metaphorically transport viewers across borders and historical eras, the pink-hued fantastical vessel is also a tribute to the physical and personal journeys undertaken in pursuit of the American Dream.

The sculpture is elaborately piped in Mayorga’s signature faux-frosting: thickened acrylic applied through pastry bags, which references the artist's familial labor of baking and the broader histories of women’s work and immigrant labor. The disarmingly sweet exterior and the color pink become a subversion, a sugary shield, and a portal to a hopeful future.

The carriage itself looks prepared for a journey, with suitcases stacked on the roof, horses sporting Hello Kitty backpacks, and a smiley-face flag fluttering optimistically above. Tricked-out wheels with gold rims spin slowly beneath the carriage — an homage to the lowrider culture rooted in Mexican-American communities of Chicago, where the artist’s family lives. Wrapped around the carriage are painterly scenes of migration, layering European art historical tropes with personal and collective narratives.

Mayorga has coined the word “Latinxoco” to describe her distinctive style — taking inspiration from both Latinx and Rococo aesthetics, and the shared decadence of colonial Mexico and American culture. The carriage featured in Magic Grasshopper references the royal carriage of the Second Mexican Empire, which was modeled after the opulent coro­nation coach of Louis XVI at the Palace of Versailles, and was used at the Castillo de Chapultepec in Mexico City — a castle built atop sacred Aztec land. The title, Magic Grasshopper, refers to the English translation of the Nahuatl word Chapultepec (“hill of the grasshopper”), and evokes a mythical vehicle able to transcend the constraints of space and time.

Sited in Times Square, a crossroads of transportation, tourism, and visual symbol of the City that connotes big dreams and new beginnings, Magic Grasshopper mirrors the district’s spectacle, scale, and sense of possibility, while transporting us into deeper conversations about identity, immigration, and belonging.

As part of the project, Mayorga will partner with ART FOR CHANGE—a hybrid platform that connects socially conscious collectors with in-demand contemporary artists—to debut a limited edition work. A portion of net proceeds from the edition will benefit a nonprofit organization of the artist’s choice.

Magic Grasshopper will be on view free and open to the public 24/7 on Broadway between 46th and 47th Streets from October 15–December 2, 2025. Further programming details will be announced at a later date.

Deets: Canstruction is back at Brookfield Place! The beloved annual design competition challenges teams of architects, engineers, and contractors to build sculptures made entirely out of unopened cans of food. The large-scale sculptures are displayed in an exhibition open to the public and later donated to City Harvest to help feed those in need.

There are a variety of ways to engage with and learn more about Canstruction, including a live build, tours, an activity worksheet for youngsters, and more!

LOCATION: Canstruction takes place throughout Brookfield Place, which is located at 230 Vesey Street in Lower Manhattan. Visit the Information Table in the Winter Garden at BFPL to donate cans of food and speak to a brand ambassador to learn more!

In celebration of Stranger Things Day — and the upcoming release of the show’s fifth and final season — Stranger Things: The First Shadow, the Tony Award–winning play based on the hit Netflix series, will host a Homecoming Week event packed with freebies, photo ops, and fan activities in New York City.

Festivities kick off on Nov. 4, when fans can snag free tickets to the Broadway show at the Times Square location of Raising Cane’s Chicken Fingers. Deets: The Other Art Fair Brooklyn, presented by Saatchi Art, returns November 6–9, 2025, at ZeroSpace in Brooklyn for its 16th edition. Bringing together a curated selection of 130 independent artists from around the world, the Fair continues its mission of highlighting emerging art, starting at $100. Known as the antidote to gallery-centric art fairs, this unique event offers accessibility for both artists and collectors on all levels, subverting the traditional art-buying experience by valuing inclusiveness through transparent pricing and direct connections between collectors and artists. This edition’s Selection Committee is comprised of India Baleyjusa (Saatchi Art Curator), Daisha Board (Curator, Gallerist), and Paola Gallio (Curator & Gallery Director, Tappeto Volante Projects).

The centerpiece installation of this fall’s Brooklyn edition will be Splendour by Atelier Sisu, a Sydney-based design studio led by award-winning artists Renzo B. Larriviere and Zara Pasfield. Atelier Sisu creates experiential environments, installations, and sculptures that blur the lines between art and architecture— “art-chitecture.” Splendour, suspended in an oculus form, is a monumental floating sculpture inspired by the fleeting, transformative qualities of sunlight. Its sliced ovals appear to hover effortlessly above the audience, catching and scattering sunlight across shimmering dichroic discs, transforming throughout the day and night for an otherworldly experience.

Hypersonic [Art & Design] will bring several kinetic sculptures to the fair, including the experimental Circular Series and prototypes from Diffusion Choir. This Brooklyn-based multidisciplinary studio, founded in 2010 by Bill Washabaugh, creates kinetic sculptures and interactive installations that merge art, science, and technology. Working with artists such as Jenny Holzer and Kara Walker, their work has been exhibited at SFMOMA, the Museum of Science in Boston, and the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences.

The Main Bar installation, created by artists Adam Rose and Richard Hoffman, reimagines the Met Cloisters as The (Brooklyn) Cloisters, an ephemeral installation where medieval history meets contemporary art. The space features an interactive portrait experience titled Manuscripts: Destroyed, where guests can book a personalized session and receive a portrait that is then transformed with bold, graffiti-style destruction.

This edition of the Fair proudly presents Evelyn Gardiner as the Brooklyn New Futures Award winner. Established in 2021, the New Futures program offers mentorship and a complimentary exhibition booth to support exceptional, up-and-coming talent. Gardiner is a New York City–based artist whose practice explores the relationship between nature’s cycles and human spirituality. Drawing on personal experience, her oil paintings and printmaking reflect the persistence of nature and the dualism that intertwines the earthly with the divine. Through her work, Gardiner captures the interplay between fragility and eternity, offering viewers a meditation on resilience and the cycles that shape all living things.

Debuting at the Brooklyn edition, the Artisan Section will showcase three local creative hubs specializing in collectible decorative fine artworks.. This new program highlights the intersection of fine art and design, allowing visitors to explore one-of-a-kind, handmade works that reflect Brooklyn’s vibrant maker culture. Inaugural exhibitors include Clay Space, Dirtbag ArtHaus, and Textile Arts Center.

The Fair also welcomes Arts Gowanus as an exhibiting partner, spotlighting Brooklyn’s creative community with a pop-up space where attendees can design their own tote bag based on the concept of creating a monster from the Gowanus Canal. It will then be heat-pressed for them and ready to take home.

The Other Art Fair Brooklyn is proud to support the Black Trans Femme Collective (BTFA) as its official charity partner. BTFA works to create safe spaces and opportunities for Black trans femmes in the arts, amplifying their voices and expanding visibility through creative platforms.
