Deets: Lion dances. The art of calligraphy. A celebration of tradition and community. The Seaport, in partnership with the New York Chinese Cultural Center and the South Street Seaport Museum, invites you to join the neighborhood’s festivities to usher in the Year of the Rabbit.

On Saturday, January 21, a traditional Lion Dance will begin in at Pier 17 at 12:30pm and wind its way on to the Tin Building and Seaport Square.

As a special activity, the Seaport Museum is hosting Chinese Calligraphy Workshops on Saturday, January 21 at 1pm, 2pm, and 3pm. Using a traditional calligraphy brush, participants will be instructed on how to write simple characters while exploring the relationship between ancient Chinese pictographs and their modern-day ideographs. Together, we will learn the evolution of the Chinese characters that tie to fish, the sea, and a prosperous New Year.

Looking for a full weekend of Lunar New Year family activities? Bring your family and friends of all ages for free to the South Street Seaport Museum January 21-22 11am to 5pm. Warm up in the Museum’s introductory galleries while creating your own Nautical Chinese Lion Chain using paper links inspired by the colorful signal flags that sailors use to communicate.

Color and light shows, complete with shooting stars and a DJ set, we invite you to join us on the ice after the Lion Dance and workshops.
