Deets: Top pastry chefs and bakers from New York and beyond will go head-to-head in the 5th annual Paysan Breton Kouign Amann Contest on October 18 at Pier 57, competing to see who can make the best version of Brittany’s iconic pastry. The event brings together some of the city’s top pastry talent, from independent bakeries and pâtisseries to luxury hospitality and artisan bread specialists.
The Kouign Amann (pronounced “kween ah-MAHN”) is a traditional Breton pastry made with laminated dough, butter and sugar, resulting in crisp, caramelized layers and a rich, almost croissant-like texture. Once a relatively niche French specialty in the U.S., it has increasingly found a place alongside croissants and other premium French pastries - making the contest a fun lens into the pastry’s growing popularity and the techniques behind it.
Hint for the Average Socialite: The event is free and open to the public, with registration required for guests who want to taste the entries and participate in the People’s Choice voting. Register now!
