Deets: NYC is begging for spring. With Earth Day coming up on April 22, Manhattan neighborhoods like the Flatiron NoMad district are preparing to welcome the season and celebrate Mother Earth with a full Earth Month of outdoor fun and sustainability-focused public events.

On April 15, New Yorkers are encouraged to do their part by recycling unwanted e-waste (old computers, cell phones, printers) and textiles (clothing, shoes, bedding, linens) on Community Recycling Day at the Flatiron South Plaza from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. Last year, community members donated nearly 3,000 pounds of e-waste. This is the first year that Community Recycling Day will welcome textiles in addition to electronics.

On April 25, one of New Yorkers’ favorite days return when streets are closed to vehicular traffic for Car-Free Earth Day (think: a preview of Summer Streets which return in June). In partnership with NYC DOT, Flatiron NoMad Partnership will be closing down Broadway from 31st to 20th Streets for cars (just part of a total closure of 30 blocks from Times Square to Union Square) allowing bike riders and pedestrians to enjoy moving through the district's main thoroughfare safely and freely. Riders and non-riders alike can look out for interactive, family friendly activities on the Flatiron South Plaza.

Visitors can take advantage of world-class dining in the district and enjoy it in a sustainable way by visiting Flatiron NoMad’s Green Dining District. The first and only certified eco-friendly restaurant collection in NYC, 12 concepts in Flatiron NoMad – including favorites like Scarpetta, Rezdora, and BLACKBARN – have committed year-round to lowering waste and emissions, saving nearly 100,000 pounds of waste annually.

Throughout the month of April, visitors to the Flatiron NoMad district can enjoy tastes of spring through new blooms in refreshed flower boxes and planters, strolling through Madison Square Park, taking in a 30-foot art installation “Dreamland Sirens” by Charlotte Colbert, and capturing the season – and soon-to-be uncovered Flatiron Building – through a festive spring photo frame.
