Deets: There is an upcoming celebration of Madison Square Park’s Moon Tree—an American Sweetgum grown from a seed gifted to the park by NASA after it orbited the moon—on Thursday, July 16 from 12PM-8PM. The Launch Party celebrates one year of growth for the tree with space-themed, family-oriented programming, including:

  • Solar observations through telescopes, binoculars, and LightSound devices, which allow you to “listen” to the sun

  • Tours through the Celestial Gardens, a display of more than 10,000 plants with shapes, colors, names, and other attributes evoking space and celestial bodies

  • New York State Poet Laureate Kimiko Hahn reading her new poem about the Moon Tree’s journey

  • “Ask a Scientist” sessions with researchers from the Simons Foundation
Celestial-themed scavenger hunts and artmaking; and more

The day’s main celebration will take place from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM, including a special children’s presentation at 4:30 PM and closing remarks at 7:15 PM.
