CHERRY BLOSSOM POP-UP BAR, DC

  • Google Calendar ICS

Deets: Drink Company’s third annual Cherry Blossom Pop-Up Bar (PUB) will open Thursday, February 28 with over-the-top décor inspired by the Fontaine de L’Encelade at the Palace de Versailles in France. The French fairytale garden will feature wooden trellises covered in abundant flowers including peonies, roses, and Japanese cherry blossoms.

Cocktails at Cherry Blossom PUB echo the nod to Japanese culture, including the Honeydew, Honey See, which explores the flavors of rice using sake, Americano vermouth, shio koji (spent fermented sake grains made into a tea, then a syrup), cucumber, honeydew, and absinthe; and the Way of Tea, a vodka soda riff made with Wheatly Vodka, Manzanilla Sherry, green tea syrup, lime acid, and Perrier.

The layered, multi-room concept will also feature a ramen room in partnership with Hiro Mitsui, the chef behind the cult-favorite Union Market food stall Ramen by UZU. Mitsui will serve his popular vegan miso ramen, often called DC’s most delicious ramen, in a room with a giant sculpture of ramen noodles and chopsticks as well as a mural by artist Andrew Funk.

Cherry Blossom PUB opens February 28th and runs through April 21st.

OPENING RECEPTION FOR MIRROR MIRROR, VA

Deets: Celebrate the arrival of a new sound-responsive installation on Alexandria’s Waterfront

Mirror Mirror is a temporary installation that responds to sound with illuminated color. Visitors can talk, sing, and play within the installation and be bathed in rainbow-hued light. The artwork does not make noise. It responds to sound with light, allowing visitors to interact with the artwork and affect its appearance using their voices and bodies. (Click here to see and hear a working model.)

Created by SOFTlab, a New York-based design studio led by artist and architect Michael Szivos, and inspired by Jones Point Lighthouse’s historic Fresnel lens. When illuminated, the panels remain mirrored, creating an infinite, colorful reflection that Szivos compares to “a forest of light.”

The installation is an open circle, 25 feet in diameter and approximately 8 feet high. Visitors are encouraged to walk, dance, play, and sing inside and around it.

This project is the inaugural work for the Office of the Arts’ Site/See: New Views in Old Town public art series, an annual presentation of temporary installations that showcase Alexandria’s Public Art Program through innovative, exciting, high-quality contemporary art at this key riverfront location. Stay tuned for news about the 2020 artist.

About SOFTlab

SOFTlab ?is a design studio based in New York City led by Michael Szivos. The studio operates at the intersection of architecture, art, video, and interactive design. They approach projects by exploring contextual conditions and effects. By examining local conditions, they create interventions that become an extension of something existing on site that might not be readily apparent. The studio develops their work as a translation of these often dynamic phenomena on the site. In that way, their work forms an experiential contextualism, rather than a literal one. The specificity of the connection to the site is made through active engagement. This allows SOFTlab to achieve projects which are unexpected, yet become appropriate as they unfold.

ANNUAL WHITE HOUSE EASTER EGG ROLL, DC

ANNUAL WHITE HOUSE EASTER EGG ROLL, DC

Deets: The White House Easter Egg Roll is a tradition that dates to 1878. Originally, young children in Washington, D.C., would flock to Capitol Hill every Monday after Easter for egg rolling and a day of activities. Members of Congress grew tired of the growing crowds and passed an Act of Congress which prohibited egg rolling on the Capitol grounds. The event was moved to the White House in 1878 after President Hayes was approached by young children to use his backyard to roll eggs. Nearly every Easter since, the White House has invited young children to roll eggs on the White House lawn.

Today, the Easter Egg Roll has grown from a few local children rolling eggs on the White House lawn to become the largest event held at the White House, filled with live entertainment, sports, interactive cooking demonstrations, and, of course, the traditional rolling of the Easter eggs. The Easter Egg Roll promotes healthy and active living and is designed for children 13 years of age and under.

Who You May Spot: The First Family

Hint For The Average Socialite: Ticket lottery opens at 10AM ET on Thursday, February 28th and closes at 10AM ET on Monday, March 4th. Access the official lottery website here.

Easter Egg Roll tickets are free and will be made available via an online lottery. To enter the lottery, participants are prompted to create an account on the Recreation.gov website. 15TH ANNUAL BREWER’S BALL BY CYSTIC FIBROSIS FOUNDATION, DC

7:00 PM19:00

15TH ANNUAL BREWER’S BALL BY CYSTIC FIBROSIS FOUNDATION, DC

Deets: Esteemed breweries, top regional companies and delicious restaurants will join the Metropolitan Washington, D.C. chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis (CF) Foundation for its 15th Annual Brewer’s Ball Served Up by Baker Tilly on Saturday, March 2, 2019 at 7:00 pm at the stunning National Building Museum (401 F St NW). Guests will enjoy unlimited beer tastings and paired bites, interact with the region’s top brewers and chefs, bid on silent and live auction items all while dancing to the energetic sounds of 90’s cover band White Ford Bronco. Proceeds from the night will fund the CF Foundation’s mission to find a cure for cystic fibrosis and improve quality of life for people with the disease. Tickets are available at www.dcbrewersball.org for $150 per person, of which $80 is tax-deductible.

“Brewer’s Ball Served Up by Baker Tilly is a highlight annually for those that love great beers and better causes,” says Dennis O'Leary, one of three co-chairs for the event. O'Leary's desire to help find a cure for CF is deeply personal – his son, Casey, was born with the disease.  “In our first year hosting Brewer’s Ball, we raised $40,000. Last year at the 14th annual Brewer’s Ball, we were able to raise an incredible $285,000. Those funds have contributed greatly towards research for new treatments, programs and care for those with cystic fibrosis like Casey. There’s no cure for cystic fibrosis yet, but we won’t stop hosting Brewer’s Ball until there is.”

Tickets to the event include unlimited pours from 40 incredible craft breweries as well as unlimited bites from 30 of the region’s most celebrated restaurants like Daikaya, Ambar and Ivy City Smokehouse. Featured local favorite breweries Port City Brewing Co., DC Brau, Brookeville Beer Farm, Denizens Brewing Co. and Old Ox Brewery all return to support the popular annual event, alongside renowned brands like Allagash Brewing Co. and Goose Island. As an added treat for beer enthusiasts, local breweries Adroit Theory and Belly Love Brewing Company will once again come together to make a special collaboration brew served exclusively at Brewer’s Ball. This exclusive annual brew honors four-year-old Brooke, a daughter of one of the event’s committee members who lives with CF. In between samplings, guests can hit the dance floor and groove to a live performance by White Ford Bronco. The evening will be co-emceed by WUSA9’s Ellen Bryan and Reese Waters.

While there is not yet a cure for CF, programs and support that have resulted from CFF’s work have greatly increased the quality of life for people with CF. CF is a rare, genetic, life-shortening disease that affects every organ in the body and makes breathing difficult. Some people with the disease say it’s like breathing through a narrow straw. In people with CF, a defective gene causes a thick buildup of mucus in the lungs, pancreas and other organs. In the lungs, the mucus clogs the airways and traps bacteria, leading to life-threatening lung infections. Sixty years ago, most children did not live long enough to attend elementary school, but thanks to Foundation-based research and care, the median survival age of people with CF is now about 40.

ABOUT THE CYSTIC FIBROSIS FOUNDATION

Founded in 1955, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation is the world's leader in the search for a cure for cystic fibrosis. The Foundation was started by parents desperate to save their children’s lives. Their relentless and impassioned determination to prolong life has resulted in tremendous strides over the past 60 years in accelerating innovative research and drug development, as well as advancing care and advocacy. Virtually every approved cystic fibrosis drug therapy available now was made possible because of the Foundation and its supporters. Still, the CF Foundation believes no one should have to die at a young age. We will not rest until there is a cure for all people living with CF.

EVERYTHING IN EXISTENCE EXHIBITION AT ARTECHOUSE, DC

Affair: Everything in Existence by fuse Exhibition at ARTECHOUSE

When: Thursday, January 17 - Sunday, March 10, 2019

Hot Spot: ARTECHHOUSE, Washington, DC

Deets: Concepts of eternity and infinity are put on display at ARTECHOUSE’s newest exhibition - Everything in Existence by internationally-acclaimed Italian artist studio fuse*. Offering new perspectives from which to observe and consider our reality, Everything in Existence draws audience into something larger than what we already know.

Over the past ten years, fuse* has worked to imagine new modes of expression at the confluence of art, science, and technological research, creating new languages to reveal our human nature and create unique experiences that give audiences a sense of common ground and participation. Everything in Existence traces a line that highlights the evolution of the studio’s practice, presenting four multimedia installations that invite audiences to experience different perceptions of reality and new perspectives that are designed to remind us that we are all part of something bigger. The works are generated by a software that processes data in real time, whether that data is derived from interaction with the viewer (“Snowfall”), from social networks (“Amygdala”), from sound (“Clepsydra”) or from the software itself (“Multiverse”). Using this generative technique, fuse* creates “living” art that constantly renews itself and changes before one’s eyes, rewarding prolonged viewing and repeat visits from the spectator. This interplay between the human hand of the artist or the participant and the invisible inner-workings of the algorithmic software, which ultimately creates the artworks, parallels the relationship between humans, in all of their vulnerability, and the mysterious, extremely vast, and incomprehensible forces that push us towards the unknown, beyond the limits of the known world.

“Everything in Existence is meant to bring people together in a new place with a new perception of reality, a different point of view and the feeling of being all part of something bigger, being part of everything that exists”, Mattia Carretti, co-founder of fuse*.

Everything in Existence is the first solo North American exhibition for the award-winning and internationally-recognized studio fuse*. Combining technological research and artistic vision, fuse* creates multimedia works that aim to inspire, push limits, and connect light, space, sound, and movement.

ABOUT THE ARTIST fuse*

Founded in 2007 by Luca Camellini and Mattia Carretti, fuse * is a group of researchers and artists involved in the creation of multimedia works and live-media performances that interlink virtual, artistic and architectural elements, exploring the limitless possibilities of emerging digital technologies, while amplifying the emotional impact of narration on the viewer. The works are created to inspire people, push back limits, and seek out new interplay between light, space, sound, and movement. fuse* has always linked its activity and development to that of the community in which it operates, supporting, promoting and developing projects aimed at spreading culture and knowledge. For this purpose, since 2016 fuse* has been co-producing the electronic music and digital arts festival called NODE in Modena, IT.

Hint For The Average Socialite: Tickets are available now!
